It is no secret that Maruti Suzuki and Toyota joint venture is preparing a new mid-sized SUV for the Indian market. It will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and the MG Astor. The launch of the new model was scheduled in 2022; however, it is most likely to be delayed to 2023.

– The new model will have two versions – one each for Maruti Suzuki and Toyota. Both models will have different designs and interiors. However, the SUVs will share body panels and features.

– The new mid-sized SUV will be produced at Toyota’s facility in Bidadi, Karnataka. It is reported that the new SUV will be manufactured on the same production line that produces the recently discontinued Yaris sedan. This production facility was earlier planned to manufacture the Vitara Brezza; however, the plan has been changed and the platform will now produce the new mid-sized SUV.

– The new mid-sized SUV will measure around 4.3 meters in length. It was speculated that the new SUV will be based on the Suzuki’s global C platform that also underpins the Suzuki Vitara. However, it is reported that the new model will be based on Toyota’s new low-cost DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) that also underpins the Toyota Raize sub-compact SUV. This platform is designed for emerging markets.

– The new SUV is likely to get the Suzuki’s tried & tested 1.5-litre petrol engine with a stronger hybrid system. In the current form, this engine produces 104bhp and 138Nm of torque. It was reported that Suzuki is also developing a 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine, which could power4 the new SUV. The company could also use the 1.4L Boosterjet engine that powers the global-spec Swift Sport.

– The joint development and production will help Toyota and Suzuki to significantly reduce the development cost. Toyota and Suzuki will most likely to follow the Hyundai and Kia strategy, which sells the Creta and the Seltos. Both models share the platform, engine options and even features.

– Toyota and Suzuki joint venture will target the Korean automakers, which currently rules the mid-sized SUV segment.
