Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has achieved yet another milestone by selling over 1 lakh Smart Hybrid Vehicles (SHVS) – Ciaz SHVS and Ertiga SHVS – in the domestic market. With an aim to promote hybrid and electric mobility, the Indo-Japanese carmaker introduced the SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) technology as a replacement to the diesel versions of both the cars.

While the Ciaz was the first Maruti to receive this mild hybrid technology in September 2015, the Ertiga SHVS was launched in October 2015. This move also made them beneficiaries of the Government’s FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India) scheme. The company’s SHVS mild hybrid technology also made the Ciaz SHVS (28.09kmpl) the most fuel efficient car of the country. On the other hand, the Ertiga SHVS delivers the best-in-class 24.52kmpl. Maruti Suzuki reveals that its SHVS equipped vehicles accounts for over 60% of volume of the two models. Read – Maruti Ciaz Remains India’s Top Selling Mid-size Sedan

Speaking the success of SHVS sales, Mr. R S Kalsi, Executive Director, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki said, “As we move towards hybrid and electric cars, we see this as a first important step in this space. Both Ciaz SHVS and Ertiga SHVS are high on fuel efficiency, come with reduced running costs and lower levels of CO2 emission, thus making these popular among customers. The response we have received for SHVS equipped Ciaz and Ertiga encourages us to continue to invest in new technologies that support the environment while benefitting the customer.”

Coming to the SHVS technology, this system is more efficient than the conventional set-up and saves energy while braking or decelerating. It utilizes an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and an advanced high capacity battery for generating power. The SHVS has three important features Idle Start Stop, Engine Assist and Brake Energy Regeneration.

The Idle start stop system automatically switches off engine while idling and restarts it again as soon as the clutch is pressed. While the engine assist enhances performance and fuel efficiency of the vehicle, the brake energy regeneration aids to the engine’s idle-stop-start function and acceleration.
