Maruti Suzuki & Toyota’s SUV Trial Production Begins; Launch Soon

Toyota and Maruti Suzuki JV is working on multiple new SUVs for the Indian market. The JV is all set to launch the new mid-sized SUV before the end of this year. A new media report claims that the trial production for the first SUV has already been commenced.

The report further suggests that the new model could be revealed around June or July. The new model could be launched during festive season, before Diwali. The new Toyota-Maruti SUV will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi plant number 2 in Karnataka.

The new Toyota-Maruti SUV will be based on a modified and localised version of Toyota’s TNGA-B (or DNGA) platform. It is reported that the new SUV will be produced using suppliers from both companies. While some crucial systems will be supplied by Toyota regulars, the bulk of the suppliers are from Maruti Suzuki’s set of component manufacturers. The suppliers will have to improve the quality of components to adhere to new standards and procedures.

The new Maruti-Toyota SUV are likely to be offered with two petrol engines with hybrid drive unit. While the first model will come a mild hybrid tech, the second will have a stronger hybrid system with higher power and better fuel economy. To achieve competitive pricing, most of components for the hybrid system will be manufactured in India.

Suzuki has already started battery production in India, and the new Maruti XL6 is the first car to be supplied from Hansalpur Gujarat. The JV between Suzuki, Toshiba and Toyota-owned Denso is called TDS Battery is likely to produce all the Lithium-ion batteries for the group. While Suzuki is providing local expertise, Toshiba and Denso are looking at cell technology and module technology respectively.

Both, Maruti and Toyota will have different design, look and feel. The new models will share styling cues from bigger Toyota’s including RAV4 and the Corolla Cross. The Maruti’s version will have resemblance with the Suzuki A-Cross (re-badged RAV4) on sale in European market. The Toyota D22 SUV will come with a larger airdam with a honeycomb mesh pattern and split headlamps with double LED DRLs.

The Maruti’s version will feature A-Cross inspired LED DRLs with the split headlamp setup and a new grille. The SUV will have a pronounced wheel arches, alloy wheels, turn indicators mounted ORVMs and a high ground clearance.

Both models will come with a wide range of safety and security features. The new models will come with a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity, connected car tech, an electric sunroof, cooled seats, cruise control, heads-up display (HUD) and others.
