Maruti Suzuki is yet to make a final decision on the launch of the 5-door Suzuki Jimny SUV in India.
Maruti Suzuki had showcased the new Jimny mini off-roader at the 2020 Auto Expo. It was reported that the production of the new model will commence from May 2020; however, it has been delayed due to Coronavirus Pandemic. The SUV was reportedly to be launched in early 2021; however, a new media report claims that Maruti Suzuki is still unsure about launching the Jimny SUV in India.
Speaking to Times Drive, Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said that the company is still evaluating Jimny’s prospects for the Indian market and nothing is finalized as yet.
The Suzuki Jimny SUV had received an excellent response from the visitors at the 2020 Auto Expo. The SUV showcased was the three-door SUV, which only accommodates 4 adults with no space for luggage. To make it a success in India, Maruti Suzuki will have to make a five-door version for our market. For this, the Indo-Japanese automaker will have to make new investments. Adding to it, the stretched length could also impact Jimny’s handling.
It was reported that Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch the new Jimny SUV in the price bracket of Rs 8 lakh – Rs 10 lakh. At this price, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny could impact the sales of the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Maruti S-Cross.
It is expected that the 5-door Suzuki Jimny could be called the new-gen Maruti Suzuki Gypsy in India. The new model is equipped with several modern day features like a SmartPlay infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, air-conditioning, keyless entry, engine start-stop button and automatic headlamps. It is likely to receive dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, ESP, forward braking assist and hill start assist features.
Powering the new Jimny SUV is a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine producing 103bhp and 138Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. It will come with Suzuki’s advanced 4X4 – AllGrip system.
