It is no secret that Suzuki is testing the long wheelbase version of the Jimny off-roader in Europe. The new Suzuki Jimny LWB is reportedly to be introduced in the global markets in the second half of 2021. Maruti Suzuki will also launch the Jimny 5 door version in the country to rival the likes of the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha.
India Launch Timeline
Maruti Suzuki is still saying that the Jimny off-roader is under evaluation for the Indian market. However, media reports claim that drawings of the new model have already been finalized for the Indian market. In fact, requests for quotations (RFQs) have also been submitted to domestic suppliers.
While the exact launch timeline is yet to be announced, few media reports claim that the new Suzuki Jimny 5 door could be launched in the end of 2021 or early 2022. It is also reported that the new model will be on sale by July 2022.
Engine Specs
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5 Door will be offered with petrol engine option. It will be powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that churns out 103bhp of power and 138Nm of torque. This engine currently powers the Brezza, Ciaz, S-Cross, Ertiga and the XL6. It is likely to feature Maruti’s Smart Hybrid fuel saving tech. With 1.5-litre petrol engine, the 5-door Jimny won’t qualify for the lower excise duties on offer in the sub-4 meter category.
Dimensions
The India-spec Jimny 5 door will be based on the Jimny Sierra, which was unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo. The Sierra is slightly longer, wider and taller than the global-spec Jimny crossover. The regular model measures 3,395mm in length, 1,475mm in width, and 1,725mm in height, and offers a ground clearance of 205. However, both SUVs get the same wheelbase of 2,250mm.
The India-spec model will be 300mm longer and 100kgs heavier than the Sierra. In fact, the wheelbase will be raised by 300mm. The increase in length and wheelbase should help Maruti Suzuki to create more space inside the cabin. The SUV is expected to feature forward-facing second row of seats. The leaked document reveals that the Jimny 5 door will measure 3,850mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,730mm in height. The SUV will have a wheelbase of 2,550mm, while the ground clearance stands at 210mm. It will have a kerb weight of 1190kg.
Design Changes
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5 door will receive significant design changes to keep things fresh in the market. It is rumoured to share styling cues from the upcoming Jimny 3-door facelift. The SUV will new front design with brand’s new global design philosophy. It is expected to receive revised bumpers, grille, wheels and headlamps. However, the SUV will retain the original design of the Jimny. The interior is likely to receive updated multimedia system and new graphics in the instrument console.
