Maruti Suzuki Plans to Enter Compact SUV Segment to Rival Seltos, Creta

Suzuki Vitara Concept

Despite facing slowdown, Maruti Suzuki is planning to make new investement in new product development and capacity expansion. The new investement will be made to further strengthen its position in the competitive Indian market. What’s more interesting is that Maruti Suzuki is eyeing at the 5-seater premium SUV segment, which is currently dominated by Hyundai Creta.

Speaking at the 38th Annaul General Meeting, RC Bhargava, Maruti Suzuki India chairman said, “We will bring in a number of new products, the investments for which are on track. The second line at our manufacturing unit in Gujarat is fully operational. The third line will be commissioned in the first quarter of the next year. Production will be aligned to market demand.”

The company will start third product line at the Gujarat based facility in early 2020. Maruti Suzuki is reportedly planning to launch the new-gen Jimny as the new Gyspy in India in 2020. The India-spec model will be a 5-door SUV and is expected to feature 250mm longer wheelbase. Previous media report suggests that Suzuki plans to make the Gujarat production facility as export hub for the right-hand-drive market.

On being asked about the robust bookings for Seltos and Hector, Bhargava said, “Demand for SUVs in India is growing rapidly. Only recently, we introduced the XL6. We recognise the importance of SUVs and will work to ensure that the market is adequately covered”

This clearly hints that Maruti Suzuki is planning to enter into the 5-seater premium SUV category. In fact, the company is reportedly working on an all-new SUV to be positioned above 4 meter in length. The new model is likely to be unveiled at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo in the concept form. It is expected to preview the next-gen Suzuki Vitara. Media reports also suggest that Maruti Suzuki is working on a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine to power the new SUV.
