Maruti Suzuki Developing 6 New SUVs For India – Details

Japanese automaker, Suzuki is reportedly developing 9 SUVs for India as well as global markets. Out of these 9 models, two are being developed in collaboration with Toyota. Maruti Suzuki will play major role in the development of these SUVs. The company is developing 6 SUVs including the new Brezza.

Maruti Suzuki is developing the new Brezza, a new mid-sized SUV (Codenamed YFG), a new YTB Coupe SUV, Jimny LWB (Long Wheelbase), a new Y17 7-seater SUV and a YY8 global SUV (electric only). The YFG mid-sized and the YY8 electric SUV are jointly developed by Suzuki and Toyota.

1. New Brezza (April 2022)

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up for the launch of the new Brezza sub-4 meter SUV. Likely to be launched by April 2022, the new Maruti Brezza will come with all-new cabin and significantly revised exterior. The SUV will be based on Suzuki’s Global C-platform that underpins the outgoing model. The new model will come with several segment first features such as an electric sunroof, a 360 degree parking camera, paddle shifters,

It will come with a bigger 9-inch free-standing touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, voice recognition, navigation system. The SUV will come with 6 airbags & electronic stability program (ESP). The new Brezza will be powered by the same 1.5L K15B petrol engine with SHVS hybrid technology. The existing 4-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox will also be replaced with a new 6-speed torque convertor automatic unit.

2. YFG mid-sized SUV (End of 2022)

The new mid-sized SUV, codenamed YFG is likely to be launched in the third quarter of 2022. The new model will be jointly developed by Suzuki and Toyota; later codenamed D22. Both SUVs will be based on DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture), which also underpins the new Toyota Avanza and the Raize SUV. The new mid-sized SUV will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi plant.

The new Maruti YFG mid-sized SUV will feature Toyota’s hybrid system. Adding to it, the new SUV could receive the existing 1.5L K15B petrol engine with SHVS mild hybrid system or the 1.4L turbo petrol engine. It is reported that Suzuki’s version could be called “Vitara”.

3. YTB Coupe SUV (2023)

MSIL is also develoing a coupe-styled SUV, codenamed YTB for the Indian market. The new model will sit under 4 meters and will be sold alongside the Brezza SUV. The new Maruti YTB Coupe SUV will be sold through NEXA premium dealership network.

The new Maruti YTB Coupe SUV will be based on Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform that underpins the Baleno & the Ertiga. The new model is likely to be equipped with a stronger hybrid system. It will be an India-centric model and could be exported to select Emerging markets.

4. Jimny LWB (2023-24)

Suzuki is developing a LWB (Long Wheelbase) version of the Jimny off-roader SUV. The new model will mainly target the Indian market; however, it could also be launched in select international markets. Leaked media reports suggest that the Jimny 5-door will be based on the Sierra and will have 300mm longer wheelbase. The length will also be increase by 300mm. Leaked documents reveal that the new model will measure 3,850mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,730mm in height. The SUV will have a wheelbase of 2,550mm, while the ground clearance stands at 210mm. It will have a kerb weight of 1190kg, which is 100kgs higher than the 3-door Sierra.

Measuring under 4 meters, the 5-door Jimny for India is expected to get the 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine. However, it won’t be qualify for the tax discounts offered on the small car in India. This engine is capable of producing 103bhp of power and 138Nm of torque. The vehicle could also get a mild hybrid system, which should improve its fuel efficiency.

5. YY8 Battery Electric Vehicle (2024-25)

Suzuki and Toyota JV is also developing a pure electric SUV for the Indian as well as global markets. The new model will be an all-new mid-sized SUV, codenamed YY8. It is likely to make global debut in Europe around October 2024, while India launch expected in the first half of 2025. The new electric SUV will be based on a different derivative of the 40PL platform, which is codenamed 27PL. The platform will be used to develop a wide range of family EVs starting from compact cars, MPVs or SUVs.

The new mid-sized SUV will have a high level of local content, including the battery pack. The battery pack will be sourced from TDSG, a large-scale battery manufacturing JV between Suzuki, Denso and Toshiba. The JV has already set up a manufacturing facility in Gujarat to locally manufacture lithium-ion battery packs.

6. Y17 7-seater SUV (2024-25)

Maruti Suzuki is reportedly developing a new 3-row SUV for the Indian market. Codenamed Y17, the new SUV will be offered in 6 and 7-seat options. The SUV will likely to replace the XL6 6-seater crossover-MPV. It will rival the Hyundai Alcazar and other 3-row SUVs in India. The new model could be based on Ertiga’s HEARTECT platform.
