Maruti Suzuki Could Launch 3 New Sub-4 Meter SUVs In India

Maruti Suzuki is planning to introduce 5 new utility vehicles to regain the pole position in the SUV category, which is currently hold by Hyundai-Kia Group. The company is likely to introduce 3 new sub-4 meter SUVs in the country. The hugely popular Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza will receive a generation change in the first half of 2022.

Adding to it, Maruti Suzuki is rumoured to be working on an all-new compact crossover based on the Baleno platform. This crossover will be positioned against the Tata Nexon. The third sub-4 meter SUV from Maruti Suzuki is likely to be the Jimny; however, MSIL has stated that the launch is not confirmed. Previous reports suggest that MSIL could launch the 5-door Jimny in India by 2023.

Maruti Suzuki is also aiming to bring back diesel cars in the country. The Brezza and the Ertiga will receive the BSVI compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine in 2021. It is expected that the next-gen Brezza could be based on the modified version of the existing Global C platform that also underpins the new-gen Vitara. The company could also use the Toyota Raize’s DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture), which is rumoured to underpin a new mid-sized SUV.

The compact SUV is expected to use the existing 1.5L K15B petrol engine. In order to avail excise benefits, MSIL could also introduce a new 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine which is reportedly under development.

Codenamed YTB, the Maruti Suzuki’s Baleno based crossover is rumoured to be launched in the second half of 2022. By using the Baleno platform, Maruti Suzuki is aiming to save production costs and time spend on developing a brand new product. The new model is likely to be offered with Suzuki’s 1.2L petrol engine, which also powers the Baleno hatchback.

The new sub-4 meter SUVs are expected to be introduced at the 2020 Auto Expo; however, MSIL is yet to make an official announcement on the same.
