Maruti Suzuki Alto Completes 15 Years; Over 38 Lakh Units Sold
Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has announced that the company’s top-selling Alto brand has crossed the 38 lakh sales mark in India. Favoured for its compact dimensions, efficient engine and drivability, the hatchback has been ruling the segment ever since its launch. It’s the country’s best-selling car for 15 consecutive years. Interestingly enough, the Maruti Alto took 8 years to breach 10 lakh sales mark, while the next 10 lakh units were sold in just 4 years. In 2014, the carmaker introduced the new Maruti Alto K10 with significant exterior and interior design changes. In 2016, the Indo-Japanese carmaker gave a mid-life update to the Alto 800 and in the same year it crossed the 30 lakh sales milestone.
In April 2019, the Maruti Suzuki Alto was launched with a new BS6-compliant 800cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine pushing out 48PS with 69Nm of torque. With the upgrade, the hatchback becomes India’s first BS6 compliant entry segment car. Though, it witnessed a marginal decline in fuel economy.
The BS6-ready Maruti Alto delivers a claimed mileage of 22.05kmpl. The carmaker also introduced the driver airbag, ABS with EBD, a seatbelt reminder for driver and co-passenger, rear parking sensors and a speed alert system as standard safety fitments.
