Maruti S-Cross, Vitara Brezza to Get Petrol Engine this Year

New Maruti S Cross 2017 Facelift India

It is no secret that Maruti Suzuki is pushing for petrol cars to drive sales in the Indian market. The company will cease the production of diesel cars from April 2020, post BSVI emission norms. Maruti Suzuki’s popular UVs including Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross are only available in diesel avatars. If media reports are to be believed, the petrol powered S-Cross and the Vitara Brezza will be launched before the end of this year.

Both SUVs are powered by Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre MJD diesel engine. This engine will be discontinued and won’t be upgraded to meet the BS6 emission norms. The petrol powered S-Cross and the Vitara Brezza could use the Maruti Suzuki’s new 1.5-litre K15B engine that also powers the Ertiga, XL6 and the Ciaz.

The 1.5-litre petrol engine is capable of producing 103.5bhp of maximum power and 138Nm of torque. Similar to the Ertiga and the Ciaz, the petrol engine will be coupled with Suzuki’s SHVS dual-battery mild-hybrid system. Transmission options are likely to include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. Also See – Maruti S-Presso mini SUV details revealed

Maruti Suzuki is also looking at CNG powered cars to drive sales in the market. The company believes that the demand for CNG-powered vehicles will increase in future. Moreover, the company may launch diesel cars in future if demand exists. The company’s in-house developed 1.5-litre diesel engine won’t be upgraded for the new norms.
