Maruti might launch SX4 S-Cross and XA-Apha compact SUV in 2015

Maruti Suzuki SX4 S-Cross

At the recently concluded 2014 Indian Auto Expo, India’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki unveiled the SX4 S-Cross and Ciaz mid-sized sedan concept. It is expected that the Ciaz based sedan will be launched by the festive season (Dushera, Diwali). This sedan will replace the aging SX4 sedan in India. If media reports to believe, the company might also launch the SX4 S-Cross in the country in 2015, however, nothing concrete on the same has been revealed.

With the growing demand for sub-4 metre SUVs in the market, carmakers are contemplating their compact SUVs in the highly potential segment. MSI also felt a need of mini SUV, which we believe to be the production version of XA Alpha which was showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo. It is expected that the production version of XA Alpha will make its Indian debut by the early 2015. It was speculated that Maruti will unveil the compact SUV at the 2014 Auto Show; however, the company showcased the SX4 S Concept.

Maruti XA Alpha will directly compete against the likes of Ford EcoSport, which is likely to be powered by the Fiat sourced 1.3-litre multi-jet engine. This mini SUV will also get a petrol engine which we expect to be the 1.4-litre engine that powers the Ertiga MPV.

Not just XA Alpha, the Indian market will see a fleet of new compact SUVs in the coming years. The upcoming sub-4 metre SUVs include Honda Brio based SUV, Hyundai Grand based SUV, Chevrolet Adra, Volkswagen Taigun, Mahindra S101 and many more. Well, Maruti SX4-S Cross will be a costlier product and is likely to be priced in the range of Rs. 9-14 lakh. It will compete against the likes of Nissan Terrano, Tata Safari Storme and others.
