Maruti Jimny Sierra – Launch Timeline, Interior and Specs

Maruti Suzuki had showcased the Maruti Jimny Sierra 3-door mini off-roader at the 2020 Auto Expo. Set to replace the iconic Gypsy, the upcoming Jimny Sierra will be manufactured at the Suzuki’s Sanand facility in Gujarat. Adding to it, the production plant could also serve as a production hub for the export market as well. The carmaker aims to produce around 4000 to 5000 units of the mini SUV, most of them will be reserved for the export market.

Media reports claim that the new Suzuki Jimny’s production will be commenced from May 2020; however, Maruti Suzuki is yet to make an official announcement on the same. The company will introduce the Sierra edition of the mini off-roader, which is also in sale in the Japanese market.

The company hasn’t revealed the exact launch timeline for the SUV, but media reports suggest that the new Jimny could be launched by the end of this year (around November, 2020). It was speculated to be launched in the first half of 2021.

The new mini off-roader will be sold via NEXA premium dealership network. The new model will be priced under Rs 10 lakh, and will be positioned under the Vitara Brezza.

Suzuki Jimny Specifications

Powering the new Maruti Suzuki Jimny Sierra is a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which also powers the Vitara Brezza, Ciaz and the S-Cross. This engine is tuned to produce around 100bhp of power and 130Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. It will come with Suzuki’s advanced 4X4 – AllGrip system.

In the global markets, the Jimny is also available with 660cc turbocharged petrol engine that is capable of producing 64bhp of power and 95Nm of torque. There is a choice of a five-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.

The new Maruti Jimny is based on the modified version of the ladder-chassis platform. The new model carries the conventional boxy utility vehicle stance. Featuring neo-retro design, the new mini off-roader looks like the smaller version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen. Upfront is a large front bumper with big air-dams, round LED headlamps and fog lamps, clamshell bonnet, a five slate grille with vertical openings and steep windshields. The mini off-roader features minimal curves and flow lines, and has simple side profile. It gets prominent squared-off wheel arches, flat roof, squarish windows and trapezoidal wheel arches. Design highlights include body coloured wing mirrors, turn indicators on wheel arches, drip rail, rounded tail-lamps and boot-mounted spare wheel.

The standard Jimny measures 3,395mm in length, 1,475mm in width, and 1,725mm in height, and offers a ground clearance of 205. The Sierra is longer and wider than the standard variant. In fact, Maruti Suzuki will launch the longer Jimny Sierra in India. In terms of proportions, the mini off-roader is 3,550 mm in length, 1,645 mm in width, and 1,730 mm height, along with a ground clearance of 210 mm. Both the models get the same wheelbase of 2,250 mm.

The new Jimny’s cabin is way modern and feature-loaded than the previous model. It gets all-black interior scheme with modern features like a SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other key features include Ignis-like aircon vents, automatic climate control and Swift-like steering wheel. The mini off-roader gets modern features like keyless entry, engine start-stop button and automatic headlamps.

The SUV is equipped with host of safety and security features like six airbags, tire pressure monitoring, ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake-Force Distribution), dual sensing brake support (DSBS), electronic stability program (ESP), forward braking assist, shock absorbing seat design and hill start assist features.
