2019 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

The new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine is claimed to offer 94bhp of power and 225Nm of torque.

It is no secret that Maruti Suzuki is working on a new 1.5-litre diesel engine. This engine will be compliant with upcoming BSVI emission norms and will replace the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre DDiS diesel. For people not in the know, the 1.3L diesel engine won’t meet the upcoming stricter emission norms. In fact, Fiat confirmed that they are not going to update this powertrain for the future emission norms and it will eventually phase out from the market.

A new media report claims that the new 1.5L diesel powertrain is ready for launch. It will initially be offered on the Ciaz sedan as an option. It is expected that the new 1,498cc, 4-cylinder, DDiS 225 engine will come without Suzuki’s smart hybrid technology (SHVS). This engine is claimed to offer 94bhp of maximum power at 4,000rpm and 225Nm of peak torque between 1,500-2,500rpm.

The new engine is claimed to be lightweight and features a dual mass flywheel. In fact, the report claims that the new diesel engine with Ciaz will offer an impressive fuel economy of 26.82kmpl. Also See – Upcoming New Maruti Cars

As we mentioned above, the new 1.5L diesel engine will come as an option with the Ciaz sedan. The 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine will continue to be on sale until BS-VI emission norms kick in. This engine is coupled with Suzuki’s SHVS mild hybrid system and is capable of producing 89bhp of maximum power and 200Nm of torque. The Ciaz sedan is also available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine with SHVS unit. This engine produces 103bhp of power and 138Nm of torque.

The new 1.5-litre diesel engine will also power the new-gen Ertiga MPV, which was launched in November 2018. The company is also working on a 7-seater SUV based on the next-gen Vitara SUV. It is expected to make its debut at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo.
