With the arrival of new and updated models, the competition is getting fiercer in the sub-4 meter SUV segment. While the top-selling Maruti Brezza entered into its second generation, the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet received minor updates. The Tata Nexon model lineup witnessed expansion with the addition of new variants and special editions. In September 2022, the Maruti Brezza recorded total sales of 15,445 units against 1,874 units of the same month previous year.
With a massive growth of 724%, the Brezza became the top-selling SUV in the country. It’s followed by the Tata Nexon that registered sales of 14,518 units as opposed to 9,211 units of September 2021. The subcompact SUV recorded a sales growth of 57.6%. The Nexon has been giving a tough competition to the Brezza with a sales gap of 927 units only.
The new Maruti Brezza comes with a 1.5L petrol engine boosted with a mild hybrid technology. The motor delivers a claimed power of 102bhp and 137Nm of torque. It can be had with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic unit with paddle shifters. Maruti Suzuki says that the new Brezza promises a fuel efficiency of 20.15kmpl.
The Tata Nexon, on the other hand, is available with the 1.2L turbo petrol (118bhp/170Nm) and 1.5L diesel (108bhp/260Nm) engine options. Both manual and AMT gearboxes are on offer. The compact SUV has three drive modes – City, Eco and Sport. Compared to the Brezza petrol hybrid, the Nexon petrol is more powerful and slightly less frugal (17.5kmpl). Though, the Nexon diesel offers a claimed mileage of 21.1kmpl.
Compared to the Nexon, the new Maruti Brezza is slightly longer and taller that’s translates into more legroom and headroom. The former is wider offering better shoulder room. In fact, the Tata Nexon has a boot space of 350-litres, which is 22-litres more than the Brezza.
