2. Sporty Design, Interior

The new Baleno Cross will be the production version of the Futuro-e concept that was displayed at the 2020 Auto Expo. The model has been spotted testing under heavy camouflage; however, the overall silhouette and design elements share styling with the concept. The cross comes with new Suzuki design philosophy, which we have already seen on the new Grand Vitara.

The front fascia of the Baleno Cross will have a split headlamp set-up with slim LED DRLs with the 3-block NEXA signature at the top of the bonnet and main LED headlamp sits lower. It comes with a more angular front grille with mesh inserts. Also visible is a rising waistline that has prominent haunch over the rear wheels. It shares the alloy wheel design with the Baleno. It has sloping roofline that dips towards the tailgate, and has raked windshield. The cross will come with a raised suspension setup and chunky wheel arches.

Not just styling elements, the new model will share the cabin & features with the Baleno hatchback with some twists. It will get a new 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, Suzuki Connect and voice commands. In terms of features, the Cross will have an automatic AC, multi-functional steering wheel, digital console, rear AC vents and others.

3. Suzuki’s HEARTECT Platform

Maruti Suzuki’s two new SUVs, the Brezza and the Grand Vitara are designed and developed on Suzuki’s Global-C platform that underpins the new S-Cross in overseas markets. On the flip side, the Baleno Cross will be based on Suzuki’s lightweight HEARTECT platform that underpins the Baleno. Suzuki engineers are likely to tweak the platform with high-strength steel to improve safety aspect.

4. Maruti Baleno Cross – Boosterjet Engine

With the new Baleno Cross, Maruti Suzuki will re-introduce the performance oriented Boosterjet (turbocharged) petrol engine. For people not in know, MSIL had introduce the Baleno RS with 1.0L Boosterjet engine in 2018. Due to low sales and stricter BS6 emission norms, MSIL had discontinued this powertrain from our market.

Seeing the rising demand for smaller capacity turbo petrol engines, MSIL has decided to bring back the Boosterjet petrol engine in the new Baleno Cross. It will be powered by a BSVI compliant 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 102bhp and 150Nm of torque. The engine is also likely to get mild-hybrid tech to achieve higher fuel efficiency. It is likely to be offered with 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox.

The Baleno Cross will also likely to get a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that powers the Baleno. This dualjet petrol engine produces 89bhp and 113Nm of torque. MSIL also has an option of 102bhp, 1.5L Dualjet petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox option.

5. NEXA Only & Competition

The new Baleno Cross will be exclusively sold through NEXA premium dealership network. The new model will rival the likes of the Honda WR-V, the Nissan Magnite, the Renault Kiger and the Hyundai Venue.
