Mahindra & Mahindra recently unveiled its all-new XUV400 electric SUV that’s slated to go on sale towards the end of January 2023. Test drives for the model will begin in December 2022, and buyers will be able to book it in the first week of January next year. Once launched, the new Mahindra XUV400 electric SUV will go head-to-head against the Tata Nexon EV Max that was introduced in May 2022. Mahindra’s first electric SUV comes with a 39.4kWh battery pack powered by an electric motor mounted on the front axle. The e-motor pushes out a peak power of 150bhp and 310Nm of torque. The automaker says that the XUV400 can do 0 to 100kmph in 8.3 seconds, thus making it fastest vehicle in its segment. It’s capable to attain a maximum speed of 150kmph.

Tata Nexon EV Max, on the other hand, features a 40.5kWh battery pack with an electric motor making 143bhp and 250Nm. It accelerates 0 to 100kmph in under 9 seconds. The top speed of the electric SUV is electronically limited at 140kmph, which is lower than the XUV400.

The home-grown carmaker claims that the upcoming XUV400 delivers a range of 456km on a single charge as per Indian driving cycle (MIDC). It comes with three driving modes – Fun, Fast and Fearless – to adjust the steering, throttle response and level of regenerative braking.

With a larger battery pack than the Nexon EV, the Tata Nexon EV Max promises an ARAI claimed range of 437km on a single charge. It’s heavier than the Nexon EV. The automaker has tuned its dampers and spring to manage its additional weight and modified its floor structure to place the larger battery pack. In fact, its ground clearance has been trimmed down by 10mm.

The upcoming XUV400’s batteries can be charged from 0 to 80 percent in 50 minutes via a 50kW DC fast charger. Using a 7.2kW/32A outlet, it can be juiced up 100 percent in 6 hours 30 minutes. With a standard 3.3kW/16A power socket, it takes 13 hours to get fully charged.

Tata offers the Nexon EV Max with two charging options – a 3.3kW AC charger and a more powerful 7.2kW AC charger. The model takes around 15-16 hours to get fully charged via a 3.3kW AC charger. When pluged with a 7.2kW AC charger, its battery pack takes around 5-6 hours. The carmaker claims that the electric SUV can be charged from 0-80 percent in 56 minutes via a 50 kW DC fast charger.

The new Mahindra electric SUV has an all-black interior with bronze accents around the AC vents and switchgear highlighting its electric nature. You can notice new gloss black inserts on the dashboard and steering wheel with Mahindra’s new logo in bronze finish. It gets an analog instrument cluster with digital MID, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system running Mahindra’s Adrenox software.

The list also includes a new drive selector, updated centre console, a single pane sunroof, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, connected car tech with Over-the-Air updates, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, 6 airbags, all four disc brakes, Isofix anchorages and IP67 rated battery pack.

The Tata Nexon EV Max has been offered in XZ+ and XZ+ LUX variants that come with features such as the upgraded ZConnect 2.0L connected car tech with 48 features, air purifier, cooled seats, smartwatch integration, electronic parking brake, an illuminated gear knob with a park mode, electronic stability program, hill hold assist, cruise control, Multi-Mode Regen with four regen levels for braking, auto brake lamp function and more. The electric SUV has beige interior theme and an exclusive Intensi-teal paint scheme.
