Mahindra XUV400 SUV To Be Developed On Ford VX-772 Platform

The upcoming Mahindra XUV400 mid-sized SUV will be produced at Ford Motor Company’s production plant in India; launch expected in 2022.

It is no secret that Mahindra and Ford joint venture is working on a wide range of products including the next-gen XUV500 based Ford C-SUV and an all-new mid-sized SUV. The duo is also working on an all-new C-segment MPV based on the Marazzo platform. It will be launched under the Ford nameplate.

Ford and Mahindra are developing new SUVs, which will be based on the Ford Motor Company platform. The new SUVs will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. The Ford platform, called the VX-722, will be used to develop the new SUVs. While new SUV will first go on sale under the Ford brand, Mahindra will also introduce the new mid-sized SUV measuring around 4.4 meters.

Commenting on the new strategy, Pawan Goenka, MD, M&M said, “The only gap that we have in the platform is a 4.4 meter kind of vehicle, and that will come from a joint product development that we are doing with Ford. This is a Ford platform called VX-772, which will take care of that need for Mahindra also.”

While Mahindra will utilise the readymade platform from Ford, the Ford Motor Company will use the BSVI compliant engines from Mahindra. Mahindra has recently introduced 3 BSVI compliant mStallion engines – 1.2L, 1.5L and 2.0L. The 1.2L turbocharged engine will power the Ford EcoSport, the 1.5L engine will be used in the new mid-sized B platform SUV and the 2.0L engine will power the upcoming Ford C-SUV.

The report further confirms that the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 will be launched towards the end of the current financial year. The C-SUV for Mahindra & Ford will be produced at Mahindra’s plant, while the B-SUV will be rolled out from Ford’s plant. The Ford C-SUV based on the XUV500 is likely to be launched in late 2021, while the B-SUV is expected in 2022.

If reports are to be believed, the upcoming mid-sized SUV will be called the Mahindra XUV400. The Ford’s version will receive a different nameplate in India. The new SUV is likely to be offered with 2 engine options – a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol.
