Mahindra XUV400 7 seater SUV

Homegrown UV maker, Mahindra & Mahindra is readying a wide range of utility vehicles including new generations of existing SUVs. The company will launch the new generation XUV500, Scorpio and Thar in the first half of 2020. Adding to it, Mahindra is also working on electric version of XUV300 and an all-new electric sedan based on the Ford Aspire. We reported earlier that Mahindra will introduce an all-new SUV, which will be positioned between the XUV300 and the XUV500.

Rumoured to be called the Mahindra XUV400, the new SUV will challenge the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Nissan Kicks. It was speculated that the new model will be based on the X100 platform that also underpins the XUV300, Ssangyong Tivoli and the Tivoli XLV. However, new media reports claim that the new XUV400 could utilize the Ford’s B-platform that underpins the EcoSport subcompact SUV.

For people not in the know, Ford and Mahindra have joined hands to form a new entity. The new joint venture will take care of the product development and marketing of Ford cars in India. Additionally, both automakers will share platforms and technologies to grow their market share. The new JV is working on an all-new C-segment SUV, which will be based on the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 platform. This new SUV will be sold under the Ford nameplate. Similarly, Mahindra will use Aspire sedan to develop an all-new electric sedan.

We believe that the Mahindra XUV400 will be based on the SsangYong’s X100 platform. The company is already developing this platform for the XUV300. The new model could share the design with the longer version of the Tivoli, called the XLV.

Tivoli XLV

The new Mahindra XUV400 is rumoured to be unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo, but in a concept form. The SUV could be launched in the late 2020 or early 2021. It is expected to be powered by BS6 compliant 1.5-litre diesel and petrol engines. Mahindra could also use the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which will also power the EcoSport compact SUV.
