The Mahindra Thar has always been a hot choice among off-road enthusiasts in India. With its latest generation change, its popularity touched new heights and proof of it lies in the fact that the new Thar crossed 1 lakh production milestone. The carmaker has rolled out its 1,00,000th unit, which was painted in new Everest White colour scheme.
The SUV managed to achieve the new production record in just 2.5 years of its market arrival. The new Mahindra Thar is being favoured for its rugged styling, commanding road presence and efficient engines.
Currently, the Thar model lineup is available with the 2.0L, 4-cylinder turbo petrol and 2.2L, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engines. While the gasoline unit makes power worth 152bhp and 300Nm of torque, the oil burner delivers 132bhp with 300Nm. Both engines come with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Recently, the carmaker added a new 1.5L diesel engine that’s good enough for 117bhp and 300Nm.
The smaller capacity diesel engine gets the 2WD system and a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 4WD (four-wheel drive) system can be had with the petrol engine. Visually, the new Mahindra Thar 2WD and 4WD models look similar. Though, the latter one has the 4X4 badge. The SUV model lineup recently offered in two new paint schemes – Blazing Bronze and Everest White.
Mahindra’s off-road SUV will soon receive a new entry-level 4X4 variant with a smaller capacity diesel engine. In the model lineup, the new variant will sit below the AX (O) trim. Besides the new 4X4 model, the carmaker will bring in the Thar’s 5-door version to challenge the Maruti Jimny 5-door that’s due for May 2023. The 5-door Thar, which is currently in its testing phase, is likely to debut towards the end of this year. Its market launch is expected to happen sometime in 2
