Mahindra Thar 5-Door Testing Begins? – Launch In 2023

We have reported earlier that Mahindra & Mahindra is planning to roll out on 5-door version of its highly-popular Thar SUV. The new Mahindra Thar 5-door will be more practical for day-to-day driving purposes than its 3-door version. Recently, a new set of spy images emerged on the web fueling rumours that the automaker has started testing the long-wheelbase (LWB) Thar in the country. However, the test mules are fully covered and it’s quite difficult to recognize the model.

Speculations are on rife that the 5-door Thar might hit Indian roads sometime in 2023. Here, it will be placed against the upcoming 5-door Force Gurkha and 5-door Maruti Jimny. Both of its arch rivals are expected to arrive sometime next year. The Thar’s long-wheelbase model will be designed on the GEN3 ladder-frame chassis that’s already used in its 3-door version. While most of its design bits are likely to be borrowed from the existing Thar, a few cosmetic changes will differentiate it.

On the feature front, the new Mahindra Thar 5-door is likely to offer a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, a multi-functional steering wheel with mounted controls, automatic AC unit, cruise control, USB charging port, roof mounted speakers and many more goodies. Rumour has it that Mahindra might equip the SUV with the ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) as we have seen on the XUV700. Its safety kit might include multiple airbags, roll over mitigation, electronic stability program, hill start control, hill descent and Isofix child mounts.

Engine setup of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door will be similar to its 3-door version. It could be offered with the 2.0L mStallion turbo petrol and 2.2L mHawk turbo diesel motors. The automaker might tune both engines for generating higher power and torque outputs. In their current form, the petrol unit makes 152bhp with 320Nm and the oil burner delivers 132bhp with 320Nm. Both engines will be available with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. All variants might get 4X4 drivetrain system as standard fitment.
