Mahindra Thar 2020

The new Mahindra Thar 2020 will be offered with new BSVI compliant petrol and diesel engine options.

Homegrown automaker, Mahindra will launch the next-generation models of the existing SUVs including the XUV500, Scorpio and the Mahindra Thar 2020 in the next 1 year. While the new Thar launch has been delayed due to coronavirus pandemic, the new XUV500 and Scorpio are now scheduled to be launched in the first half of 2021. While the next-gen XUV500 will go on sale in the Q1, 2021, the new Scorpio will be launched in the second quarter of mid-2021.

New Thar Spied

The new-gen Mahindra Thar 2020 lifestyle SUV will go on sale before Diwali, most probably around July-August 2020. It was earlier planned to be launched in May-June 2020. The SUV has been spotted testing multiple times on the Indian roads. Going by the latest spy image, it is clear that the new model is ready for the launch. The SUV was spotted wearing the white plastic, which is usually applied to a vehicle before being dispatched to dealerships.

What’s more fascinating is that the next-gen 2020 Mahindra Thar will be offered with petrol engine option for the first time. Mahindra had announced 3 new petrol engines, called the mStallion range at the 2020 Auto Expo. The engine range includes a 1.2-litre turbocharged, a 1.5-litre turbocharged and a 2.0-litre turbocharged. The new engines come fitted with integrated exhaust manifolds, off-set crankshafts, dual-mass flywheels and 250 bar fuel injection rail systems.

The 1.2L unit will soon power the Mahindra XUV300 Sportz variant. It also powers the new SsangYong Tivoli facelift for the European markets. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine will power the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 and the Scorpio SUVs. This engine produces 190bhp of power and 380Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.

The new Mahindra Thar 2020 is most likely to receive the new 1.5-litre mStallion petrol engine, which will also power the Marazzo MPV. This powertrain churns out a maximum power output of 163bhp and a peak torque of 280Nm. This lifestyle SUV will be offered with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. Few reports also claim that the new Thar could also receive the de-tuned version of the 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar will also receive an all-new BSVI compliant diesel engine, which is likely to be the 2.2-litre unit. This engine recently introduced in the XUV500 and the Scorpio. Previous media reports claim that Mahindra is also developing an all-new 2.0L turbocharged diesel engine for the next-gen Thar, Scorpio and the XUV500. The BSVI 2.2L engine is likely to produce around 140bhp of power and will be paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox. This engine is 35bhp more powerful than the previous 2.5L diesel unit. The company will also introduce the diesel automatic version at a later stage.
