Mahindra Plans To Launch A Hatchback Designed By Pininfarina In India
Mahindra is planning a hatchback and an all-new mid-sized sedan with electric power train for Indian market.
Mahindra & Mahindra, the leading utility vehicle maker is exploring new segments to regain its lost market share. The company will soon launch a 7-seater premium SUV – codenamed Y400 and a sub-4 meter SUV – codenamed S201. Traditionally known for making UVs, Mahindra is reportedly planning to enter into the hatchback and sedan segments. If latest media report is to be believed, the homegrown automaker is planning a hatchback with electric power train for Indian market.
The report further suggests that the new hatch will be designed by Italian design house Pininfarina. Besides this, the company is also planning a mid-sized sedan for the Indian market. Not just Mahindra, brands like Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and Tata Motors will launch their respective electric cars in the next few years. Mahindra will soon launch an electric mini SUV based on the KUV100. Additionally, an SsangYong Tivoli based electric SUV is also under development for the Indian market.
Speaking to ET Auto, Pawan Goenka, MD of Mahindra & Mahindra said, “For shared mobility providers Ola and Uber, a small hatchback makes good economic sense; it will have more pull in the segment”. This clearly suggests that Mahindra is keen on entering new segments to increase market share in the highly competitive Indian auto industry. Mahindra is also planning a JV with Ford Motor Company to share electric powertrains, technologies and even products.
