Likely to be called Mahindra Inferno, the upcoming sub-4 meter compact SUV will challenge the likes of Tata Nexon, Maruti Vitara Brezza & the Ford EcoSport

Mahindra & Mahindra, the homegrown UV maker will launch the long-awaited sub-4 meter SUV – codenamed S201 – in India in the first quarter of 2019. The SUV was rumoured to be called the Mahindra XUV300; however, latest media report claims that the small SUV could be called the Mahindra Inferno. The company has registered 2 names – Alturas and Inferno out of which, former is a 7-seater SUV based on the SsangYong Rexton. The name Mahindra Inferno is also a big departure from Mahindra’s traditional approach of opting alphanumeric names.

For people not in the know, the Mahindra S201 compact SUV is based on the SsangYong’s X100 platform that also underpins the Tivoli SUV. This model will challenge the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport. This platform will also be used to develop a 7-seater SUV, which is expected to arrive in 2019. The new model will sit above 4 meter in length and will rival the Hyundai Creta, which will also receive a 7-seater version in 2020. The Mahindra Inferno is also expected to mark the debut of a new 1.2-litre turbo-charged petrol engine. Diesel engine will be sourced from the Mahindra Marazzo, which is a 1.5-litre unit.

Mahindra Inferno Launch Date

Mahindra Inferno Price In India

In Mahindra’s product lineup, the Inferno will be slotted between the TUV300 and the Scorpio. The SUV will feature a powerful engine along with a well-equipped cabin and new sporty design bits. It will also receive a range of segment-first features, which will surely work in favour of Mahindra’s new compact SUV. As far as pricing is concerned, the Mahindra Inferno price in India is expected to start from Rs 8 lakh for base model and Rs 13 lakh for the top-spec model.

Mahindra Inferno Specifications

Mahindra hasn’t released the engine details of its upcoming new compact SUV. The SUV will come in petrol and diesel guise. The petrol version is likely to debut a new 1.2-litre, turbocharged engine that will also be used in the future Mahindra & SsangYong’s product. This gasoline motor can produce up to 140bhp of power; however, exact figure for the Inferno will be revealed in near future.

It is also speculated that the S201 will be the most powerful compact SUV in the country. The diesel version of the SUV will be powered by a newly developed 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine that also powers the Marazzo. This engine is capable of producing 123bhp of power and 300Nm of torque. Mahindra Inferno Mileage

It is expected that Mahindra will focus more on performance with this sub-4 meter SUV. We believe that this model could deliver around 17kmpl in petrol and over 20kmpl in diesel option.

Mahindra Inferno Exterior

Mahindra’s owned SsangYong and Pininfarina, the renowned Italian car design house, is helping the homegrown automaker to design the new sub-4 meter SUV. It is built on the SsangYong’s X100 platform that also underpins the SsangYong Tivoli. While the front design is completely new, the SUV shares design and body panels from the sister SUV. Going by the spy images available on the internet, it is visible that the SUV gets a newly styled grille at the front fascia. Elements such as a sculpted bonnet, sweptback LED headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, fog lamps with chrome surround, new bumper and wide air intakes will further enhance its sporty appeal. There will be lot of creases and curves all around the body giving a sporty side profile. The SUV will run on the double-spoke, diamond cut alloy wheels. At the back, the SUV gets an integrated roof spoiler with stop lamp, newly-designed LED tail lamps, rear fog lamps and aggressive bumper.

Mahindra Inferno Interior

The cabin of the new Mahindra SUV is completely new, sharing some of the design elements from the Tivoli. The SUV is claimed to be equipped with several segment-leading features like LED headlamps with daytime running lights, leather seats, push-button engine start/keyless entry, 7-airbags and a large touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It will also support the navigation system. The touchscreen will also work as a display for the reverse parking camera.

The SUV will also get multi-functional steering wheel, automatic climate control, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, and a factory-fitted electric sunroof. The vehicle might also come with different customization options for upholstery. For safety purpose, the SUV will receive dual-front airbags and ABS with EBD as standard. In fact, the higher trims will come with 7-airbags, traction control, ESP and hill-launch assist. The SUV will also receive segment-first all-4 disc brakes.
