Mahindra Developing 5 Electric SUVs & New Electric Pickups

The homegrown SUV maker, Mahindra will unveil its new electric passenger vehicle strategy in London next month. The company has announced to unveil 3 new born electric vehicles on August 15, 2022. A new report claims that the new born electric SUVs will take shape at its engineering and R&D centre at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai. Mahindra is recruiting about 900 engineers to build EV capabilities and design and develop new electric vehicles at its MRV centre.

Mahindra & Mahindra currently has over 2,400 engineers working on multiple ICE vehicles. Speaking to ET Auto, R Velusamy, President, Automotive Technology & Product Development, M&M, said, “we have our EV track in Detroit too, and they also do one of the programmes for us. In tthe UK, we have the design centre led by Chief Designer Pratap Bose. The styling happens there. Rest of the engineering, the architecture, happens here (MRV).”

Mahindra XUV300 EV

It is also reported that Mahindra & Mahindra may set up a satellite engineering centre for electronics in Coimbatore. The report further claims that Mahindra & Mahindra plans to have a portfolio of 5 electric SUVs by 2026-27. Four of these models will be ground up electric vehicles, while the fifth model will be the XUV400.

The Mahindra XUV400 is basically the electrified and larger version of the XUV300. The company aims to invest a total of INR 10,000 crore for the EV play between FY22 and FY27. Adding to it, Mahindra engineers have also started working on electric pick-ups. These pick-ups will be part of M&M’s commercial vehicle business.

Mahindra Electric SUVs teased

While Mahindra has ramped up its facilities and capabilities in MRV, it will depend on a set of partners in the EV journey. Mahindra & Volkswagen have recently joined hands, which will help the former to develop new EVs. VW will supply components from its MEB platform to M&M’s Born Electric SUVs.
