Based on the SsangYong Rexton G4, the Mahindra Alturas 7-seater premium SUV will challenge the segment leaders – Toyota Fortuner & Ford Endeavour.
After introducing the Marazzo MPV, Mahindra is all set to enter into the 7-seater premium SUV segment dominated by Toyota Fortuner & Ford Endeavour. The company will launch a new 7-seater SUV, codenamed Y400, in India on November 24, 2018. The company has officially confirmed that the new SUV will be called the Mahindra Alturas G4. Official bookings for the vehicle have been commenced across the nation. Mahindra claims that the new SUV will offer “luxury and exclusivity in its bold & imposing design and luxurious interiors” along with thrilling performance and off-road capability. According to the company, “the word Alturas means ‘height’ or ‘pinnacle’.
To be positioned above the XUV500, the Mahindra Alturas SUV will take on the Toyota Fortuner & Ford Endeavour. Set to be brand’s flagship model, the Alturas will replace the ageing SsangYong Rexton in India. In fact, the SUV is basically the re-badged version of the new-generation SsangYong Rexton. The new model will be offered in two variants – G2 2WD and G4 4WD. The SUV will be powered by a 187bhp, 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine paired to a 7-speed automatic gearbox.
Mahindra Alturas Launch Date
First previewed at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo, the upcoming Mahindra’s 7-seater premium SUV will be launched on November 24, 2018. Interested buyers can pre-book the SUV through official Mahindra dealerships.

Mahindra will import this SUV in a CKD form, which will be assembled at its Chakan, Pune based plant. Media reports suggest that the new SUV will undercut the prices of its closest rival – Toyota Fortuner – by good 4 to 5 lakhs. We expect the new SUV to cost between Rs 22 lakh and Rs 28 lakh.

At the heart, the Alturas 7-seater SUV has a 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine from the global SsangYong Rexton. According to the Korean automaker, this engine will “deliver progressive acceleration from a standing start and a strong low end torque typical of SsangYong engines”. The turbocharged engine churns out a maximum power output of 180.5bhp at 4,000rpm and a peak torque of 420Nm between 1,600rpm and 2,600rpm. Transmission duties will be carried out by a 7-speed torque-convertor E-Tronic automatic gearbox sourced from Mercedes-Benz. It will come with both the 4WD and the RWD system. Mahindra Alturas Mileage
The new-gen Rexton is claimed to be 50kgs lighter than the previous model, which should improve the overall fuel efficiency of the SUV. We believe that the new model could deliver somewhere around 14kmpl.

The Alturas SUV is built on a new-generation body-on-frame chassis that also underpins the new-gen Rexton. First unveiled as LIV-2 Concept in 2016, the 7-seater SUV will come equipped with muscular exterior design. The sporty front fascia comes with big bumper with chrome accents running across the width, signature Mahindra grille with vertical chrome slats, LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights and prominent bumper. Moving towards the side, the SUV has rugged alloys and pronounced wheel arches. Sharp creases, sloping roofline and slim A & B pillar further enhances the sporty quotient of the SUV. In terms of proportions, the new Alturas 7-seater SUV is bigger than the segment-leader – Toyota Fortuner. The SUV is 4,850mm in length, 1,960mm in width and 1,800mm in height. Unlike exterior that comes with familiar Mahindra face, the cabin of the new Alturas 7-seater SUV is similar to the global Rexton. Featuring modern touches and technologically advanced features, the SUV will be Mahindra’s most expensive and flagship offering in India. It comes equipped with a dashboard mounted vertically positioned 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and in-built navigation.
