Mahindra Alturas G4 is available in two variants – 2WD and 4WD .

Mahindra & Mahindra introduced its flagship SUV – Alturas G4 – on 25th November, 2018. The premium 7-seater SUV is made available in two variants – G2 2WD and G4 AWD – priced at Rs 26.95 lakh and Rs 29.95 lakh, respectively (all, ex-showroom Delhi). At this price point, the Mahindra Alturas G4 takes on the segment leaders – the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. In the name, ‘Alturas’ stands for pinnacle or height.

For the record, Mahindra claims that the new SUV offers “luxury and exclusivity in its bold & imposing design and luxurious interiors” along with thrilling performance and off-road capability. In the company’s product lineup, the Mahindra Alturas G4 sits above the XUV500 and introduced as a replacement to the SsangYong Rexton. This premium 7-seater SUV is essentially the re-badged version of the fourth-generation SsangYong Rexton. We have already driven this SUV and are quite impressed with its performance and feature-laden premium interior.

The Mahindra Alturas G4, which is the re-badged global-spec Rexton, have been brought to India via a CKD route. The SUV is being assembled at the Mahindra’s Chakan, Pune based plant. In order to compete well against the segment-leaders, Mahindra has priced this model quite competitively. In fact, Mahindra’s premium SUV undercuts its arch rivals – Fortuner and Endeavour. The SUV carline is available in two fully-loaded variants – G2 2WD and G4 4WD – priced at Rs 26.95 lakh and Rs 29.95 lakh, respectively. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.

Mahindra’s new 7-seater SUV sources its power from a 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine carried over from the global-spec SsangYong Rexton. According to the home-grown carmaker, this oil burner “delivers progressive acceleration from a standing start and a strong low end torque typical of SsangYong engines”. The turbocharged motor is capable to produce a top power of 180.5bhp at 4,000rpm, while generating a peak torque of 420Nm between 1,600rpm and 2,600rpm.

Transmission duties are done by a 7-speed torque-convertor E-Tronic automatic gearbox sourced from Mercedes-Benz. The SUV is made available with both the 4WD (all-wheel-drive) and the RWD (rear-wheel-drive) system. Suspension mechanism includes double wishbone with coil spring at upfront and multi-link independent at the rear.

Mahindra Alturas G4 Mileage

The new-generation Ssangyong Rexton (global-spec) is claimed to be 50kgs lighter than the previous model that aids to its fuel efficiency. Since the Mahindra Alturas G4 is the re-badaged Rexton, it’s as frugal as its donor sibling. It delivers fuel economy between 10kmpl – 11kmpl. Though, the official mileage figure hasn’t been revealed by the carmaker.

Based on the new-generation body-on-frame chassis, the Mahindra Alturas G4 looks quite macho and offers a commanding road presence. The front fascia of the SUV has aggressive appeal, thanks to its signature grille with bold vertical chrome slats, projector headlamps with integrated LED DRLs (daytime running lights) and sporty bumper. The LED fog lamp with cornering lamp and HID headlamps are exclusively offered on the top-spec 4WD variant.

The side profile of the SUV has been adored by 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, flared wheel arches, chrome window surrounds and body-coloured door handles with chrome inserts. The sharp side creases, sloping roofline, dual-tone (Black & Silver) roof rails and slim A & B pillar further enhance its sporty quotient. Round the back, the SUV sports LED rear combination side lights, roof integrated spoiler with high-mounted LED stop light and LED number plate lights.

The new Mahindra 7-seater SUV comes in a choice of 5 colour schemes – Pearl White, Lakeside Brown, D Sat Silver, Napoli Black and Regal Blue.

With respect to dimensions, the new Mahindra Alturas 7-seater SUV is bigger than the segment-leader – Toyota Fortuner. The overall length, width and height of the SUV stand at 4,850mm, 1,960mm and 1,845mm respectively. The SUV has a 2,865mm long wheelbase that translates into a spacious cabin. Mahindra Alturas G4 is the most feature-laden SUV from the home-grown carmaker. The dual-tone (Black & Grey – 2WD/ Tan & Black – 4WD) quilted Nappa leather interior with premium center console with leather finish door trims, soft touch dashboard and door pads and LED room lamps (for all three rows) add a premium feel and appeal. The Alturas offers the best-in-class material quality. Features such as easy access mode, ambient mood lighting, sunroof with anti-pinch, illuminated front door scuff plate and dashboard centre and inside door handle (front) lamp are reserved for the range-topping trim.

Aiming to boost its comfort quotient, Mahindra equips the SUV with features like ventilated seats, 8-way adjustable powered driver seat, dual zone fully automatic temperature control, 2nd and 3rd row AC vents, tiltable and telescopic steering wheel, heated ORVMs with LED side indicators, 12V power outlets, 2nd two USB charger, keyless entry, smart power windows, dual smart key system with start/stop button and speed sensing front wipe. While the 2WD variant gets front power windows with auto up-down and anti pinch system, the 4WD has all power windows.

Mahindra Alturas G4 also comes with a range of advanced features including 8.89cm monochromatic/17.78cm colour digital cluster with TFT LCD trip with 3 modes computer, 20.32cm touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 3D around view camera, memory profile for driver seat and ORVMs, electronic parking brake with auto hold function, steering mounted audio controls, smart powered tailgate, cruise control, speed sensing power steering and windshield de-icer function.

Mahindra Alturas G4 Practicality

Mahindra’s new 7-seater SUV has a generous boot space, even with all 7-seat unfolded. The boot space can be further extended by folding the second and third row seats. The SUV has 60:40 split fold and tumble with recline 2nd row seats and foldable 3rd row seats. It offers multiple storage compartments including a large glovebox and several cubby holes. The second row captain seat offers cup holders.

Mahindra Alturas G4 is surely one of the safety vehicles in its league. The SUV gets dual airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program, active rollover protection, hill descent control, hill start assist, brake assist system, emergency stop single, traction control system, ISOFIX mounts for child seat, seat belt pretensioner and load limiter, seat belt warning driver and co-driver, immobilizer, central door locking, side impact beams, front trimple zone, tyre pressure monitoring system, front and rear parking assist and rear glass defogger as standard safety fitments across the range. The top-spec 4WD trim is exclusively made available with 9 airbags.

Mahindra Alturas G4 Competition

In the premium full-fledged SUV space, the Mahindra Alturas G4 takes head-to-head against the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. However, it is more affordable than the other two.
