Scheduled to make its India debut at 2018 Delhi Auto Expo, Kia Stinger sportback could be brand’s halo product in the country
Korean automaker, Kia has officially made its India debut at the 14th edition of Delhi Auto Expo. The company has revealed the future SP concept, which previews the company’s future SUV design. Adding to it, Kia has revealed the Kia Stinger luxury sportback at the 2018 edition of Asia’s biggest automotive event in Delhi-NCR. The new Kia Stinger was first unveiled at NAIAS 2017. Besides Stinger and SP Concept, the Korean brand has revealed its entire global line-up at the auto event.
The Kia Stinger is basically the production version of the Kia GT concept, which was introduced at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The sportback is already on sale in the European markets. Previous media reports claim that the Stinger will not go on sale in India; however, the recent development suggests that the sportback could be introduced as brand’s Halo product. The company has revealed the Stinger sportback at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. Previous media reports claimed that the Stinger sportback won’t make its way to Indian market, but latest development suggests that the model could be launched as Kia’s Halo product. It is expected that the Stinger will be imported as a completely built unit (CBU) from South Korea. We believe that the sportback could be priced between Rs 35 lakh and 50 lakh.
In International markets, the Kia Stinger GT is available with three engine options – 2.0-litre T-GDI turbocharged petrol, 3.3-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol and a 2.2-litre VGT turbocharged diesel. The 2.0-litre turbocharged gasoline unit is capable of producing a maximum power output of 255PS and a peak torque of 353Nm. The company is expected to pick the top-spec Lambda 3.3L T-GDI twin-turbo V6 petrol engine for the Indian market. This engine is capable of producing a maximum power output of 370PS at 6,000rpm along with a peak torque of 510Nm between 1,300rpm and 4,500rpm. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The top-spec GT-S model also comes with all-wheel-drive layout. The Kia Stinger GT-S accelerates to 100kmph from zero in less than 5 seconds, before hitting a top speed of around 270kmph. These numbers will make it faster than the Ford Mustang.
In terms of proportions, the Stinger sportback is 4,830mm, 1,870mm and 1,400mm in length, width and height respectively. This model has a wheelbase of 2,905mm, which ensures spacious cabin for 5 adults comfortably. It comes with a ground clearance of 130mm. This sportback has a boot space of 406-litres, which can be further extended to 1,114mm by folding the rear seats.
Essentially the production version of the Kia GT concept introduced in IAA 2011, the Kia Stinger sportback is based on a new RWD platform that also underpins the Genesis G70. This model comes with a long hood and short front overhang, while the long wheelbase turns into spacious cabin. It comes with a long rear overhang with strong shoulders, giving it a sportback like styling. Design highlights include LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, 19-inch alloy wheels, LED rear lights, tiger nose front grille, long hood, quad exhaust, etc.
The cabin of the new Kia Stinger is simple and smart, featuring quality materials. It is equipped with several high-end features like heated, ventilated and 8-way power adjustable driver’s memory seat, customisable head-up display, 7-inch driver information display, automatic climate control and others. This sportback is equipped with several high-end safety and security features. Feature-list includes ABS with EBD and brake assist, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), VSM (Vehicle Stability Management), HAC (Hill-start Assist Control), ESS, rear parking sensors with dash display, front parking sensors, rear parking camera, Autonomous Emergency braking with forward collision warning system, Lane keeping assist, blind spot detection, driver attention alert and others.
