Kia SP2i to VW T-Cross – 9 Upcoming SUVs that will rival the Hyundai Creta

For automakers, SUVs are more profitable than the sedans and hatchbacks. SUVs are always priced higher than the sedan versions built on the same platform. In the past decade, the demand for SUVs has witnessed a huge jump. In our market, the compact SUV segment is witnessing a massive increase in demand. Renault introduced the Duster SUV in 2012, which received many awards including the prestigious ICOTY. However, the arrival of Hyundai Creta has impacted the sales of Duster. Now, this segment is all set to welcome a range of new products. Here is a list of 5-seater SUVs that will be launched in the country to challenge the dominance of Hyundai Creta.

Kia SP2i

Korean automaker, Kia will officially launch its first product in the Indian market in July-August 2019. The company will introduce an all-new SUV, codenamed SP2i, which was first previewed as the SP concept at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. The SUV will be available with 2 engine options – a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel.

Tata Blackbird

New media reports claim that Tata Motors is working on an all-new 5-seater premium SUV, which will be positioned between the Nexon and the Harrier. Honda HR-V

Volkswagen T-Cross

German premium carmaker, Volkswagen has officially announced that it will launch the T-Cross SUV in India in 2020-21. The India-spec model will be based on the heavily localised MQB AO IN platform. It will be available with 2 engine options – a 130bhp, 1.5L petrol and a 115bhp, 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol.

Skoda Kamiq

Not just Volkswagen, Skoda will also launch an all-new compact SUV based on the MQB AO IN platform. This model will share styling cues from the global Kamiq SUV. It will share the mechanics with the VW T-Cross. The SUV is likely to make India debut at the 2020 Auto Expo.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara

India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki is working on an all-new premium SUV. Likely to be based on the next-gen Vitara, the SUV will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster. The new model is expected to make debut at the 2020 Auto Expo. It will receive the newly developed 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel engine.

New Renault Duster

French automaker, Renault will launch the second generation Duster SUV in India in 2020. The new model will retain the existing profile, but it will have new design elements and an all-new cabin. MG Baojun 510

MG Motor is also readying a 5-seater SUV, which will be positioned below the Hector SUV. The company is testing the Baojun 510 SUV, which is slightly smaller than the Hyundai Creta. This model is likely to get a new name and will be sold under the MG nameplate in India.

Mahindra XUV400

If media reports are to be believed, Mahindra is working on an all-new 5-seater premium SUV that will be based on the SsangYong’s X100 platform.
