Kia SP2i SUV could be called Trailster or Tusker; Launch in September

The Kia SP2i SUV will challenge the likes of Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster/Captur, Nissan Kicks and others.

Korean automaker, Kia will officially launch its first product in the Indian market in the second half of 2019. To be based on the Kia SP2i concept, the new model will be based on the Creta SUV. Media reports claim that the new SUV could be called the Kia Trailster or Kia Tusker; however, the company is yet to make an official announcement.

It was expected that the new Kia SUV will be launched in July or August, but a new media report claim that the SUV is likely to go on sale in September 2019. The company is currently busy doing final testing before putting this new model in production line. Kia has already started trial production of the SUV at its new Anantpura facility.

Going by the spy images available on the internet, it is visible that the new Kia SP2i based SUV will be slightly longer than the Hyundai Creta. The top-spec model rides on machine-cut 17-inch alloys. Adding to it, the SUV is expected to feature a longer wheelbase to create more space inside the cabin. The SUV’s near production model was recently unveiled as the Kia SP Signature concept. It features the signature ‘tiger nose’ grille and LED daytime running lights. The headlamps and fog lamps are positioned on the lower side of the front bumper.

At the back, the SUV gets LED tail-lamps that are connected via a thick slab of chrome. It also gets shark fin antenna that add to its sporty character. The vehicle is likely to get electric sunroof in the top-spec variant. The Kia SP2i will come as a premium model and will be equipped with several high-end features. Inside the cabin, the SUV is expected to get a floating touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, automatic climate control, adjustable headrests for front and rear seats, electrically adjustable drivers’ seat, etc. It will also have ventilated front seats. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, all-4 disc brakes, seat belt reminder, speed alert and ISOFIX child seat anchors will come as standard safety features. The higher variants are likely to get ESP, VSM, hill launch assist, and multiple airbags. The SUV is expected to be powered by the BSVI-ready 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines. The company is also considering a performance oriented version of the SUV. Likely to be priced in the range of Rs 10 lakh – Rs 16 lakh, the Kia SP2i SUV will challenge the likes of Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster/Captur, Nissan Kicks and others.
