We informed you earlier that Jeep is working on 2 all-new SUVs for the Indian market. Earlier this year, the company had confirmed development of a new sub-4 meter SUV in its five-year plan announcement. Speaking to Business Standard, Kevin Flynn, managing director, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles India confirmed that the new compact SUV will go on sale in India in 2020.
The upcoming compact SUV will be the smallest Jeep model to be sold globally. This SUV will first go on sale in India, followed by other emerging markets. In India, it will challenge the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and upcoming compact SUVs from Hyundai, Mahindra, Honda and Kia. Similar to the current breed of Jeeps, the upcoming sub-4 meter model is likely to have off-road ability. This will give it an upper-hand against rivals, which are designed and developed for urban roads. However, all-wheel-drive version is not likely to be on offer. The new Jeep small SUV will be based on the Fiat Panda’s platform that also underpins the Fiat 500. The Panda is already on sale in select international markets and Fiat has already started working on an all-new platform for the crossover. The company is yet to start testing the new small SUV on roads and the design and styling details are yet to be known. We believe that the small SUV will continue to have traditional Jeep’s styling. The new Jeep small SUV will go on sale in India by 2020 and will be manufactured at FCA’s Ranjangaon facility. It is expected that Jeep could also export this small SUV to select international markets. The Indian market will see stringent emission norms and will have BS VI emission norms for vehicles.
