Tata Jayem Neo Electric Hatchback will be available for fleet market from November 28, 2017.
Tata’s mini-hatchback, Nano has undergone several changes during its production run so far. From receiving a generation leap to getting an AMT unit, Tata has tried everything on Nano in a bid to push sales. While the model still grapples to sustain competition despite its low pricing, it is now ready to receive an electric powertrain. The electric Nano will be launched in the market with a new name, Jayem Neo. Tata Motors has formed a joint-venture with Jayem Automotives, wherein the Mumbai-based company will supply Nano body shells to the latter. Besides, the pact also encompasses developing sportier version of select Tata models by the automaker. While the Nano electric will be sold under the Jayem badge for now, Tata could come up with its iteration that will be aimed at the private buyers. That said, the Jayem Neo (bereft of Tata badge) will be available for the fleet market. Prime Minister Narendra Singh Modi is expected to launch the car in Hyderabad towards the end of this month. In fact, Jayem Neo will supply 400 units to popular fleet aggregator, Ola Cabs at the day of launch. Details on the Nano electric aka Jayem Neo are yet under the wraps. While Tata Motors and Jayem Automotives have officially confirmed equipping an electric system sourced from Electra EV. In terms of pricing, the electric Nano is expected to be priced at Rs 5 lakh, though the price will be revealed officially at the launch later this month. Powered by the electric system, Jayem Neo or the Nano electric will be launched by the end of this month. It is expected that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the ceremony in Hyderabad, scheduled for November 28, 2017 and hand over the 400 units of Neo to fleet aggregator, Ola cabs.
The electric powertrain used on the Neo will be a 48-Volt electric system with 23bhp of maximum power. With the addition of an electric system, the car will see increase in overall weight. The standard Nano weighs between 695kg to 765kg (depending on the variant one picks) and derives power from a 623cc engine, whereas the electric Nano will be around 800kg. Meant for the fleet market, Neo is claimed to offer ARAI rated range of 200km in one full charge, with four passengers seated and air conditioner on, it is claimed to offer 140km of range. Information deeming the Neo is limited as of now and more details are expected to be revealed at the official launch on November 28. As for the features, it could carry over some of the bits from the standard model, though both the automakers have not confirmed anything on that front. The regular Nano packs in comfort and safety features such as an electric power steering, driver information display, digital clock, air conditioner, music system with Bluetooth connectivity, AUX-in, front power windows, 12V power socket, front seat headrest etc. Safety kit includes central locking, front & rear seat belts, hazard warning switch etc.
Tata will supply the body shells to Jayem Automotives for the electric Neo and hence it is expected to carry over the same styling as seen on the regular Nano. Additional bits will be the Jayem badge on the car and Electra EV badge on the side to signify the electric system. One must note that the electric Neo will not feature Tata badge anywhere. Though, Tata could launch a more powerful version of the electric Nano at a later stage, that will be available to the private buyers.
