Jayem Neo Electric Car Spotted; First Launch In Hyderabad

Tata Motors unveiled an extended range of its electric vehicles (Tigor EV and Tiago EV) at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. Now, the company is planning to add the Jayem Neo EV to its electric model lineup, which is recently spotted in Hyderabad. The Tata Jayem Neo is essentially the electric version of the Nano hatchback. That said, the Jayem Neo (bereft of Tata badge) will be available for the fleet aggregator, Ola cabs. Hyderabad is likely to be first city to receive the small electric fleet car. As a reminder, Tata Motors formed a joint-venture with Jayem Automotives, wherein the Mumbai-based company will supply Nano body shells to the latter. Besides, the pact also encompasses developing sportier version of select Tata models (Tigor JTP & Tiago JTP) by the automaker. As for the engine, Jayem will source electric system from Electra EV, a known name in the business of design, development and electric drive systems.

Feature details of the Jayem Neo are still under the wraps. Though, Tata Motors and Jayem Automotives confirmed that it equipped an electric system sourced from Electra EV. As far as the pricing is concerned, the electric Nano could be one of the most affordable electric vehicles in India. Jayem Neo Launch Date

Manufactured and marketed by Jayem Automotives, the Tata Jayem Neo EV will be available only in the Ola Cabs fleet. The first batch of the vehicle will include 400 units, and initially made available in Hyderabad. The launch will happen in phase manner. Powered by the electric system, Jayem Neo or the Nano electric could hit showrooms in the second half of 2018. Tata’s mini-hatchback, Nano has undergone several changes during its production run so far. From receiving a generation leap to getting an AMT unit, Tata has tried everything on Nano in a bid to push sales. While the model still grapples to sustain competition despite its low pricing, it’s now received an electric powertrain. The Neo uses a 48-Volt electric system that makes a maximum power of 23bhp.

With the addition of an electric system, the car has witnessed increase in overall weight. The standard Nano weighs between 695kg to 765kg (depending on the variant one picks) and derives power from a 623cc engine, whereas the electric Nano is around 800kg. Information deeming the Neo is limited as of now and more details are expected to be revealed at the official launch. As for the features, it might share some of the bits from the standard model, though both the automakers have not confirmed anything on that front. Tata will supply the body shells to Jayem Automotives for the electric Neo and hence it is carries over the same styling as seen on the regular Nano. Additional bits will be the Jayem badge on the car and Electra EV badge on the side to signify the electric system.
