Hyundai Starex MPV Might Launch in India; to Rival Innova, Carnival

Upcoming new MPVs - Starex

Korean automaker, Hyundai is planning to launch a wide range of new utility vehicles for the domestic market. The company is reportedly readying the 7-seater version of the new Creta and the next-gen Tucson, which are likely to be launched in 2021 and 2022 respectively. If media reports are to be believed, Hyundai is also working on an all-new premium MPV to take on the likes of the Kia Carnival and the Toyota Innova Crysta.

Hyundai is currently doing feasibility study for a premium MPV to rival the Kia Carnival. If Hyundai finds a business case for a big-sized premium MPV, we will see a premium MPV from the Korean automaker in India in 2021. It is expected that Hyunai will launch the revised version of the Kia Carnival. Also See – New Hyundai MPV confirmed for India

Kia Starex Launch

This is the second time Hyundai is considering an MPV for the Indian market. At the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo, Hyundai had showcased the Hexa Space MPV concept. This was the small segment, and the production-spec model was planning to rival the Maruti Ertiga; however, the MPV was cancelled. The new Hyundai’s MPV will be bigger than the Crysta, and is expected to share the size with the Kia Carnival. The Carnival is positioned slightly above the Innova Crysta. The MPV has been receiving positive response from the buyers.

It is expected that Hyundai could launch the Starex MPV in India. The company is testing the third generation model, which is based on the next-gen N3 platform. This platform will also underpin the next Kia Carnival and the new Sorento SUV. If launched in India, the Kia Starex will be powered by a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 197bhp and 440Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front-wheels via a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
