Hyundai Leonis Could Be The Name For Upcoming Maruti Vitara Brezza Rival

Hyundai Leonis sub-4 meter SUV will be based on the new Santro’s platform

It is no secret that Hyundai is working on a sub-4 meter SUV – codenamed QXi – which will make its global debut in India in April 2019. It was speculated that the small SUV will be called Hyundai STYX. However, a new media report claims that Hyundai has trademarked a new name “Leonis” for its future car. A new report claims that the company’s upcoming compact crossover could be called Hyundai Leonis. First showcased as the Carlino concept, the Leonis will take on the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and soon-to-be-launched Mahindra S201.

While the Carlino concept was based on the i20’s platform, the Leonis will be built on the new Santro’s platform. This platform will help the automaker to achieve aggressive pricing. Testing of the new global model has already been commenced and the model has been spotted in various locations including US, Korea and India. The Hyundai Leonis will sit below the Creta in the brand’s global lineup. With this SUV, Hyundai will officially introduce an all-new powerful 118bhp, 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. Adding to it, the SUV will also receive a new 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine which will also power the Verna, next-gen Creta and Elite i20.

Hyundai Leonis Launch Date

Hyundai has confirmed that the small SUV will be launched in 2019. While the exact launch date is yet to be announced, media reports claim that the vehicle could go on sale in March-April 2019. Hyundai Leonis Price In India

The Leonis compact SUV will be a sub-4 meter SUV and will be positioned against the Ford EcoSport and Maruti Vitara Brezza. It will be slightly premium than its direct rivals and could be priced between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 12 lakh.

Hyundai Leonis Specifications

The Korean automaker will Leonis compact SUV with a new turbocharged petrol engine instead of the existing 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre, T-GDi, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that is capable of producing 118bhp of power at 6,000rpm and 171Nm of torque between 1,500-4,000rpm. A six-speed manual gearbox driving the power to the front wheels will come as standard.

With this SUV, Hyundai will also introduce an all-new 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine. This engine will also power the Verna, new-gen Creta and Elite i20. Details about this engine are yet to be revealed, but it expected to produce close to 115bhp of power. Transmission options are likely on offer includes a 6-speed manual and an AMT gearbox. Hyundai Leonis Mileage

We expect the Leonis to offer higher fuel efficiency. While the petrol version is likely to deliver around 16-17kmpl, the diesel version could return around 24kmpl.

Hyundai’s upcoming small crossover will adorn the brand’s new design philosophy, which we have already seen on bigger Hyundai SUVs. The production version of the SUV will have similar fascia like Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe. It will have slightly revised Hyundai’s signature hexagonal cascade grille, but the SUV will have squarish face. The headlamp set-up could comprise of a twin-vertical layout with LED daytime running lights and turn indicators on the top. Side profile seems largely identical to the Creta, featuring flared wheel arches with peripheral cladding. It will have C-pillar and Creta-inspired tail-gate that should help the automaker to create enough space for passengers. The rear profile is expected to be shared with the Creta.

The cabin details of the new SUV are yet to be revealed. The SUV could share interior design and components from the Creta and i20 hatchback. It features a floating tablet-like touchscreen display for infotainment system. The SUV could get an interchangeable audio, visual and navigation units. The touchscreen infotainment system will be compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink. This display could also turn into a display for reverse camera and navigation.

In terms of features, the small SUV will receive a push button start, automatic climate control, multi-functional steering wheel and rear AC vents. Expect premium upholstery for the seats, steering wheel and gear knobs. Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, central locking and ISOFIX child safety lock will be offered as standard. The top-spec model could receive side and curtain airbags along with dual front airbags, hill launch assist, traction control and others.
