Hyundai Kona is India’s first pure electric SUV.

The South Korean carmaker has rolled out its first electric vehicle – Hyundai Kona – in India at an introductory price of Rs 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom). Initially, the electric SUV has been brought to India via CKD (Completely Knocked-Down) route along with small level of localization. For power, the Kona makes use of a permanent magnet synchronous motor that’s good for 136bhp and 395Nm. It has a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery offering a claimed range of 452km. One can charge the battery pack via 50kW DC fast charger or a standard AC source in 57 minutes and 6 hours 10 minutes respectively. There are two ways to charge the electric SUV – home charger and charging stations. Hyundai joined hands with MapMyIndia to display Kona Electric compatible EV charging stations in HMIL website and in mobile app. The carmaker says that the SUV’s design “employs refined aesthetics with organic geometric body forms and sporty contours for a modern, eco-oriented appearance”. Its interior has also been packed with high-tech features and offers decent cabin space.

With Hyundai Kona Electric, the South Korean carmaker aims to target eco-friendly car buyers. The Indian Government is also planning to switch to full-electric cars by 2030. Hyundai is aiming to locally develop this electric SUV at its production plant, though it initially imported as a CKD kit along with small level of loacalization. The Hyundai Kona EV comes at an introductory price of Rs 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom). It doesn’t have any direct competition right now, though it will lock horns with the upcoming MG eZS that will hit showrooms in December, 2019.

Similar to the regular model, the Hyundai Kona electric carries bold and sporty silhouette and shares most of its styling bits with the former. However, what mark a difference between these two models are closed front grille, 17-inch alloy wheels and slightly tweaked bumpers and spoiler.  The electric iteration of the vehicle also misses out on the exhausts. Carrying Hyundai’s new design language, the SUV features a new signature ‘Cascading Grille’, bi-function LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights and sculpted bonnet at the front end. Styling elements such as small fog lamps, skid plates and aggressive creases further enhance its bold look. Moving to the sides and you will notice the flaring fenders with sporty black plastic cladding and a pair of diamond cut five-spoke alloy wheels. It also gets a sloping roofline. The chrome beading on the window and the roof rail on the top adds sporty flair to the SUV.

The large plastic areas, which Hyundai called ‘protective armour’ – that placed over the wheel arches give it a rugged look. The flared wheel arches have been fitted to the standard 17-inch alloy wheels with 215/55 R17 tyres. While the face of the SUV seems inspired by the Intardo concept, the rear profile shares resemblance with the Tucson. Round the back, the new Hyundai SUV has wraparound cladding that accommodates reversing lights. It additionally gets a separate arrangement for foggy conditions, turn indication and reversing. The SUV also has a spoiler with an integrated LED brake light.

Hyundai Kona is available in four monotone shades – Polar White, Marina Blue, Phantom Black and Typhoon Silver. A dual-tone (Polar White with Phantom Black Roof) colour scheme is also on offer that costs additional Rs 20,000.

Hyundai packs its new electric SUV with several comfort and connectivity goodies, and most of them are carried over from the Tucson and the Creta. The Kona Electric is equipped with plethora of equipment including Hyundai’s new Drive Mode Select, dual-zone climate control and 17.77cm touchscreen system. This is for the first time that Hyundai car gets a Display Audio system that supported connected services such as smartphone sync using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Hyundai Kona SUV also comes with a wireless smartphone charging pad. The multi-functional steering wheel gets mounted controls for operating Bluetooth, telephony and audio system. An eight-speaker sound system from Krell comes as standard across the carline. Along with the above mentioned features, the SUV gets a 10-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, leather wrapped steering wheel, electric sunroof, paddle shifters for adjustable regenerative braking, keyless entry and go among several others.

Hyundai’s new electric SUV is powered by a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery offering a claimed range of 452km on a single charge. It delivers a maximum power output of 133bhp and 394Nm of torque. The electric SUV is capable to achieve 0-100kmph sprints in 9.3 seconds. The lithium ion battery pack can be charged up to 80% in minimum 57 minutes from a 50kW fast charger in long-range form and maximum 6hr 10min from a standard AC power plug for the short range versions.

Similar to the other Hyundai models, the Kona SUV is quite practical from inside. The vehicle offers multiple storage points including some cubby holes, bottle holders, glove box, etc. At the back, it also has foldable split seats that allow more space for luggage by folding it completely. This five-seater electric SUV comes with a boot space of 373-litres. Along with these bits, the car comes with convenience features such as push button start, large glove box on the co-passenger side, coin holder, bottle holders and cup holders.

Along with the comfort and connectivity features, Hyundai’s new electric SUV comes with pack of advanced safety fitments. For retarding speed, the Kona will get disc units at front axle and at rear axle. Among the primary safety bits, the car gets dual front airbags for driver and co-passenger, additional side airbags and curtain airbags. Other than these, the SUV is also packed with hill-start assist control (HAC), electronic stability control (ESC), vehicle stability management (VSM), front parking sensors, brake assist, downhill brake control among several others. The Kona SUV also achieved top-star safety rating in Euro NCAP crash tests. It scored 87% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child occupant protection, 62% for pedestrian protection and 60% for safety assist system. With such impressive score, it become one of the safest cars in the B-SUV segment.
