September 8, 2016 – Seeing the growing demand for automatic cars, Hyundai India has launched an automatic version of its hugely popular premium hatchback – the Elite i20. Priced at Rs 9.02 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the new i20 1.4 petrol automatic is now available for sale across dealerships. The Elite i20 was the only car in its league that misses out on automatic gearbox, as all of its rivals – Baleno, Jazz and Polo – come equipped with this technology. As a reminder, the Korean automaker will launch the updated i20 hatch in the country in 2017.
The production of the Hyundai Elite i20 Automatic variant has already commenced at the company’s Chennai based plant, and the made-in-India Hyundai i20 AT was recently put up on display at the 2016 Indonesian Motor Show. Instead of the regular 1.2L petrol engine, this variant is packed with a bigger 1.4L Gamma VTVT petrol engine that’s good enough for 99bhp and 130Nm of torque. The i20 Automatic is available only in a single trim – the Magna. This variant gets dual front airbags as standard safety feature. However, it’s devoid of several high-end features available in Asta trim such as ABS and EBD, alloy wheels, keyless entry, rear parking camera, the touchscreen entertainment system, automatic air conditioning and projector headlamps.
The i20 AT also miss out on tax benefits offered on small car equipped with petrol engines below 1.2L capacity. The excise duty will be increased from 12.5% to 24%, resulting into price rise. Instead of alloys, this variant gets 14-inch steel wheels.

The regular petrol version of the hatchback is available within the price range of Rs 5.57 lakh to Rs 7.58 lakh. The AT version comes with a more powerful 1.4-litre Gamma VTVT petrol engine, which makes it pricier over the 1.2L regular version. It is priced at Rs 9.02 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The India-spec model shares engine with the i20 AT which is currently on sale in the Indonesian market. This automatic version derive its power from a 1.4-litre Gamma VTVT petrol engine instead of the regular 1.2-litre Kappa. This engine deliver power worth 99bhp at 6,000rpm, produced against 130Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. A 4-speed automatic gearbox will perform the transmission duties. The i20 hatchback petrol is claimed to return an ARAI certified fuel economy of 18.6kmpl. We safely assume that the i20 1.4L petrol AT will return around 15-17kmpl of mileage.
Hyundai Elite i20 Automatic Exterior
In terms of styling, the i20 AT will be similar to the regular version. Based on the evolved Fluidic v2.0 design philosophy, the hatchback has been designed more on the European lines. The vehicle continues to feature a cab-forward styling, while the flared wheel arches give it a modern and sportier profile. Upfront, the car gets a wide grille with mesh air-intakes and chrome surrounds. The headlights have a sweptback design with silver accents, while the stylish fog lamps add more to its sporty character. It features the blacked out B-pillar and C-pillar, and the floating roofline. At the rear, the i20 has long wraparound tail lamps, and a large bumper that accommodates the reverse lights and reflectors on either sides.
Dimensions of the i20 measure 3985mm in length, 1734mm in width and 1505mm in height. The hatchback has a wheelbase of 2570mm. It comes with a ground clearance of 170mm, which is more than sufficient to tackle city roads. The car has a boot space of 285-litres, which is a tad smaller compared to its rivals. The hatchback rides on 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels.

The cabin of the i20 is premium and feature rich. The vehicle is equipped with several high-end features like multi-functional steering wheel, height adjustable driver’s seat, 2-DIN audio system with 1GB internal memory, adaptive parking assist, lane change indicator, automatic climate control, rear air-con vents, etc. However, the i20 AT 1.4L Magna misses out on several features like ABS with EBD, keyless entry, automatic climate control, alloy wheels, rear parking camera, projector headlamps, etc.
