Hyundai Celebrates 25th Anniversary In India; 90 Lakh Cars Produced

Hyundai Motor India Limited is celebrating its Silver Jubilee in 2021, as it completes 25 years in the Indian market. The company started its India innings on May 6, 1996 by inaugurating a manufacturing unit in Irungattukottai in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The production plant started producing cars in September 1998.

The Hyundai Santro hatchback was the first locally developed Hyundai, which features an MPFI engine. The company claims that i10 and i20 range have received an excellent response from buyers. Adding to it, the Creta has helped the Korean auto maker to further boost sales. Hyundai had achieved its highest ever market share of 17.4 percent in CY2020.

Hyundai is currently the number 1 SUV brand in India with 180237 units sold in CY2020. It is also the largest car exporter, as Hyundai is currently exporting cars to 88 countries. Since its inception, over 4 billion USD investments are made. Hyundai exported 5 lakh cars in 2008. In the next 12 years, 25 million more units were shift abroad from its plant.

Hyundai is currently selling the Santro, Grand i10 Nios, Creta, i20, Venue, Verna, Elantra and Tucson in the market. Adding to it, the company is also selling the Kona Electric SUV. Hyundai is readying a wide range of new cars including a new micro SUV, codenamed Hyundai AX, for the Indian market.
