Hyundai’s legendary Santro brand made a grand comeback in India on 23rd October, 2018. With all new-design, well-equipped interior and efficient powertrain, the new Hyundai Santro 2018 has certainly made an impression on the customers. Design and styling of the new Hyundai Santro 2018 is based on ‘Rhythmical Tension” and the hatchback receives comprehensive upgrades. For enhancing its comfort and safety quotient, Hyundai equips the hatchback with lots of goodies including segment-first 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link along with voice recognition function and rear parking camera display and rear AC vents. At the engine front, the new Hyundai Santro 2018 gets a 1.1L, petrol engine that’s claimed to deliver “low vibrations, superior performance and high fuel efficiency”. New Hyundai Santro 2018 Bookings

Online and dealer bookings for the hatchback were opened on 10th October. The first 50,000 customers of the new Santro were to pre-book the car at token amount of Rs 11,100 as an introductory offer. Hyundai is also offering 3 years/100,000kms warranty and 3 year road side assistance with the 2018 Santro. The carmaker claims that it has the lowest cost of maintenance with doorstep service facility.

In October 2018, the hatchback recorded sales of 8,535 units and outsold the Tata Tiago and Renault Kwid that clocked sales of 7,549 units and 6,035 units respectively. Based on the findings of its marketing and sales department, the new 2018 Hyundai Santro has been designed in India by Hyundai’s R&D centre in Hyderabad. With respect to design and styling, the 2018 Hyundai Santro (Hyundai AH2) is a far cry from the old model. However, it retains the original ‘Tall Boy’ design. The hatchback’s new-gen model is built on a new platform that consists of high strength steel (HSS) and 63% advanced high strength steel (AHSS). As mentioned above, the new Hyundai Santro 2018 houses a 1.1-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine under the hood. Hyundai claims that this gasoline motor delivers “all round performance” with power worth 68bhp (69PS) at 5,500rpm against a peak torque of 99Nm at 4,500rpm. Transmission duties on the hatchback are performed by a 5-speed manual (standard) and new AMT (Smart Auto) gearbox. The new automated manual transmission has been developed in-house and will also be used in the upcoming Hyundai new sub-4 meter SUV based on the Carlino concept that broke cover at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo.

The new Hyundai Santro 2018 is the company’s first car to feature the AMT (automatic) unit. It also comes as an option for buyers who are looking for easy-to-drive, compact and budget car. The carmaker uses deadener and carpet felt to reduce engine and road noise. Considering the demand of the CNG-equipped vehicles, the South Korean carmaker also offers a factory-fitted CNG fuel option on the 2018 Hyundai Santro carline. The CNG model generates a peak power of 59bhp at 5,500rpm and 84Nm of torque at 4,500rpm.

On the fuel efficiency ground, the 2018 Hyundai Santro is a decent performer. For the record, the company claims that the hatchback returns a mileage of 20.3kmpl (MT/AMT). The CNG model delivers a claimed mileage of 30.5km/g. The hatchback’s new model is said to be tested extensively at 2084m maximum height, 7750kms evaluation, 150kmph of maximum speed and extreme temperature of +40 to -10 degrees.

As mentioned in the beginning, the 2018 Hyundai Santro has been designed on a new platform with 63% Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) and High Strength Steel (HSS). It’s not only claimed to achieve optimum static and dynamic stiffness, but improve the structural integrity as well. While the hatchback continues to feature tallboy design, it looks more mature and refreshing than its predecessor. The front fascia of the new Hyundai Santro 2018 has been entirely revised and looks different from the previous model. Upfront, the hatchback features a revised bumper, larger headlamps and high-mounted fog lamp assembly. It also get Hyundai’s signature cascade front grille with chrome surround.  The bumpers, ORVMs and door handles are painted in body-coloured. The 2018 Hyundai Santro sports pronounced black inserts and a bulky taillamps as we have seen on the Grand i10. The window line has Honda Mobilio inspired kink running towards the rear window glass. The steel wheels wrapped in full wheel cover are standard across the carline. While the D-lite, Era and Magna trims get 155/80 R13 size of tyres, the Sportz and Asta trims are available with bigger 165/70 R14 tyres. The new Hyundai hatchback is claimed to be a “contemporary family-oriented product” with “bigger and wider” dimensions than the old model.

Dimensions

The overall length, width and height of the 2018 Hyundai Santro stand at 3610mm, 1645mm and 1645mm respectively. The hatchback sits on a 2,400mm of wheelbase, which is around 45mm longer than the old model. The petrol models offer fuel tank capacity of 35-litres and the CNG variants have 35L petrol and 60L CNG capacity.

The dual-tone (Beige and Black) interior theme with colour extending to fabric seat upholstery gives a premium appearance to the 2018 Hyundai Santro hatchback. The sporty black interior with Diana Green colour inserts are optional on the Magna, Sportz and Astra trims. The hatchback is the first car its league to feature a 7.0-inch touchscreen flanked by vertically oriented air-con vents. It’s compatible to smartphone connectivity including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link along with voice recognition function and rear parking camera display. The 2018 Hyundai Santro is also the first car its category to offer rear AC vents with claimed best-in-class AC unit.

The 2018 Hyundai Santro is also equipped with the company’s patent ‘Eco Coating Technology’ that degrades the micro-organism in the AC evaporator and prevents unpleasant cabin odour. The 2-DIN integrated audio system is reserved for AMT variants. Other features on offer includes a three-spoke steering wheel with mounted audio controls, a twin-pod instrument console, door lock finished in brushed silver, front power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs and adjustable headrests.
