Hyundai recently announced its plan to launch 8 new products in the Indian market by 2020. The plan outlined five full-model changes, two all-new models and an electric SUV. While the South Korean carmaker hasn’t yet revealed names of the new products, it is likely to include new-generation Santro, Carlino concept based compact SUV and Kona electric SUV. Cars like Grand i10, Creta, Santa Fe and Tucson might also witness major changes in coming years. Along with this, the carmaker aims to ramp up production capacity of its Chennai plant from 7 lakh units to 7.5 units per year. Hyundai Carlino concept based sub-4 meter SUV will be one of the major launches from the South Korean carmaker in India.

While the concept version of the Hyundai Carlino made its public debut at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, the production-ready model is scheduled to hit showrooms early next year. In the sub-4-metre SUV space, Hyundai’s new car will take head-to-head against the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and Ford EcoSport. While the Carlino concept was based on i20 platform, the production-ready model is likely to sit on the Grand i10 platform. The Grand i10 platform will help the automaker to achieve aggressive pricing. While the launch is months away, the engine details of the SUV have emerged on the web. Hyundai Carlino India Launch

SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) are taking the Indian market by storm, and aiming to get traction car manufacturers are expanding their Utility Vehicle lineup. While Maruti is planning to launch the global Suzuki Vitara, Tata will launch two all-new SUVs – H5X and H7X. The South Korean carmaker, Hyundai has tasted a great success in the SUV segment with Creta. Now, the company will enter into the sub-4 meter SUV segment with Hyundai Carlino (internally known as Hyundai Qxi). The Carlino or HND14 concept that was first showcased at Auto Expo was based on the Elite i20 platform. It’s the same architecture that underpins the Verna sedan. However, a few media reports suggest that the company could use the Grand i10 platform for achieving competitive pricing. Interestingly, about 60 per cent development of the SUV will be performed by Hyundai India’s R&D team. Similar to other new-age Hyundai cars, which are priced slightly higher than their respective rivals, we expect this one to cost slightly higher than its competitors. The South Korean carmaker will bring in the Carlino concept based SUV with a new smaller capacity turbocharged petrol engine instead of the 1.2-litre Kappa petrol motor. That means, the sub-4-metre SUV will derive its power from a 1.0-litre T-GDi 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that also does duty in the global-spec i20 hatchback. This powertrain can make a top power of 118bhp at 6,000rpm, while generating a peak torque of 171Nm between 1,500 – 4,000rpm. On the other hand, the diesel version of the compact SUV will be propelled by a 1.4-litre U2 CRDi diesel engine. This powertrain has already been used in the Creta and the i20. The power and torque figures of this oil burner stand at 89bhp at 4,000rpm and 220Nm at 1,500 – 2,750rpm respectively. Engine specifications of the new Hyundai SUV are yet to be revealed by the carmaker. Though, it is reported to come with a 1.0L T-GDi petrol and a 1.4L U2 CRDi diesel powertrains. Similar to its concept, the production-ready Hyundai Carlino will carry the conventional SUV-ish profile with boxy design. Unlike most of Hyundai’s cars featuring Fluidic design philosophy, this car will have aggressive stance. Design elements such as a large grille, chunky bumpers, sleek headlamps with LED daytime running lamps and scuff plates under the bumper adorn its aggressive front fascia. The company hasn’t revealed any picture of its cabin, but during Auto Expo, Hyundai have shared some of its important features. Based on fashion inspired interior themes, the SUV’s cabin will be equipped with several high-tech features. The vehicle will get interchangeable audio, visual and navigation units. The list of features will include a push button start, automatic climate control, multi-functional steering wheel and rear AC vents.
