Hyundai AX1 Mini SUV Continuous Testing; Side Design Revealed

The much-anticipated Hyundai AX1 micro SUV has been spotted testing again in South Korea. The SUV is in the advanced stages of testing, which suggests that the public debut could take place in the first half of 2021. Set to be Hyundai’s smallest & most affordable UV, the new AX1 will mainly target developing nations including India.

The spy images shows that the Hyundai AX1 shares design cues from the Venue sub-4 meter SUV. In fact, the SUV looks like a baby Venue with tall stance and compact design. The new Hyundai AX1 will be positioned against the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and the upcoming Tata HBX micro SUV.

Hyundai AX1 Side Profile

The spy images reveal that the new Hyundai AX1 CUV features split headlamp setup with LED DRLs on the top and the main headlamp unit is positioned lower on the bumper. It features a flat bonnet and usable roof-rails, pronounced squared-off wheel arches with plastic cladding, ORVMs with integrated blinkers and shark fin antenna. The spotted car has alloy wheels.

The SUV will have signature cascading front grille, flatter side profile with stronger shoulder line, curved front window frame on the trailing edge, tight overhangs, C-pillar mounted door handles and raked windshield. The spotted model has disc brakes at the front as well as the rear. The mini UV is likely to measure around 3.7 meters in length, which is similar to that of the Santro.

The new Hyundai AX1 is expected to share the interior and features from the Grand i10 Nios and the Santro. The top-end model will have adjustable headrests, touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, automatic AC, multi-functional steering wheel, etc. This could be the smallest Hyundai to offer BlueLink connected car technologies.

Likely to be based on the K1 platform, the upcoming Hyundai AX1 could be powered by a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine. While powering the i10 Nios, this engine produces 82bhp and 114Nm of torque. The SUV could also receive the Santro’s 1.1L engine that offers 67bhp and 100Nm of torque. Transmission choices might include 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox option.

The upcoming Hyundai AX1 will also receive an electric powertrain. The production version of the SUV will arrive in our market in the end of 2021. This could also be the most affordable Hyundai electric car in India.
