Honda currently retails 3 SUVs in India – WR-V, BR-V and CR-V.

Honda Motor Company aims to expand its SUV model lineup in the Indian market. In this space, the Japanese carmaker currently retails three vehicles – the entry-level Honda WR-V subcompact SUV, Honda BR-V and the premium Honda CR-V 7-seater SUV. Talking to ET Auto, Gaku Nakanishi, Honda Cars India President, said “SUVs are definitely a consideration. We see a product missing in the line-up”.

Earlier reports suggest that Honda is considering its global HR-V premium 5-seater SUV for India. It might come with both petrol and diesel powertrains paired to a manual and automatic gearbox. The petrol motor could be a 1.5L i-VTEC unit and power for the diesel model might come from a 1.6L i-DTEC engine.

With the launch of new Honda Civic, the Japanese carmaker completed its sedan lineup that includes Amaze, City and Accord. In coming years, the company will increase its presence in the premium segments and stay away from small cars. Recently, the carmaker discontinued its slow-selling Honda Brio hatchback.

From April – February FY19, Honda Cars India registered 6.5% sales growth. In March 2019, the company expects to achieve sales around 17,000 units. If it maintains the sales momentum, Honda will achieve cumulative sales of 180,000 and 8% growth. The upcoming BSVI emission norms will increase prices of the products and absorbing the increased cost will surely be a challenge for the company.
