Japanese automaker, Honda is working on an all-new sub-4 meter SUV, which is expected to be introduced in 2021. The new compact SUV is rumoured to be called the Honda ZR-V as this name has recently been registered by Honda Cars in Australia. This shows that the new compact SUV will also be introduced in Asian markets.

The name Honda ZR-V will join the company’s SUV line-up, which includes HR-V, CR-V, XR-V, UR-V, BR-V and the WR-V. It is reported that the new compact SUV will replace the Honda WR-V in some markets. However, we believe that Honda will sell the WR-V alongside the upcoming Honda ZR-V compact SUV. The WR-V is basically a crossover version of the Jazz hatchback, while the ZR-V is expected to carry rugged SUV design.

The upcoming new compact SUV will be based on the new-gen City platform, which will also underpin an all-new mid-sized SUV. Instead of City platform, Honda could also utilise the Amaze’s platform. This platform is claimed to be versatile enough to accommodate different body styles and different types of engines. The compact SUV will directly rival the Toyota Raize in the Japanese market. In India, the SUV will be positioned against the likes of the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV300, Maruti Vitara Brezza and the upcoming Kia Sonet.

The upcoming Honda compact SUV is most likely to be offered with a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol and 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engines. The global model will also receive the 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 122bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. Both manual and CVT automatic gearbox options will be on offer.

Honda will also introduce the next-gen HR-V SUV in the end of 2020 or early 2021. The new model will also mark the debut of new Honda platform. It will be significantly bigger than the outgoing model, leaving enough space for Honda to introduce a slightly smaller and affordable SUV. The new mid-sized SUV will take on the likes of the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and the Nissan Kicks. The new model will also be based on the new City platform.
