Honda Plans to Launch Electric Cars In India

Honda Cars India aims to expand its product portfolio with one new model every year in the country. The carmaker will focus on premium market and plan to bring in petrol and hybrid models that will cost over Rs 10 lakh. The range will include all-new models and new-generation and updated versions of the existing product lineup. The Japanese automaker will also import some models in India.

In his latest interview, Kunal Behl, Senior VP and Director Marketing and Sales, HCI, has revealed that the company’s next big launch will be an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) SUV that will be a global product. As a part of its global strategy, the Japanese automaker aims to achieve carbon neutrality and zero traffic fatality by 2050 and 100 percent sales from electric vehicles by 2040. In order to tap the growing Indian EV market, Honda will also introduce electric cars in near future. However, the carmaker hasn’t yet revealed details of the upcoming Honda electric cars.

With the introduction of the new models, Honda Cars India will also expand its production capacity towards the end of this year. At present, its Tapukara facility in Rajasthan produces 1.2 lakh to 1.3 lakh units per annum. It has an installed production capacity of 1.8 lakh units on annual basis, which can be further increased to around 2.2 lakh units per annum.

As mentioned above, Honda’s next product will be a petrol SUV that will take on the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The model is likely to debut in April and its market launch might happen before 2023 festive season. Similar to the new City, the Honda mid-size SUV will be offered with the radar-based ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) tech along with features such as Honda’s Lane Watch system, a 360 degree camera, electronic parking brake, etc.
