Honda Diesel Cars In India Might Be Discontinued – City, Amaze

Car manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Volkswagen, Skoda, Nissan and Renault have already phased out their diesel vehicles in India. Now, Honda Cars India might soon join the bandwagon as it’s reported to consider discontinuing its diesel cars in the country.

Speaking to an online media publication, Takuya Tsumura, President and CEO, Honda Cars India has revealed that the company isn’t thinking too much about diesel engines as its very hard to clear RDE (Real Driving Emissions) with the oil burner. In fact, most car manufacturers have discontinued their diesel powertrains in the European market.

Just so you know, the RDE norms will require cars to meet emission targets even in the rear world conditions. These regulations will come into force from April 2023. The CAFÉ-2 norms and BS6 II regulations are also set to be enforced from April 2022 and 2023 respectively. Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFÉ) norms aim at reducing fuel consumption by lowering carbon emissions. Under the CAFÉ II, the car manufacturers have to meet with the 113gm of CO2/km, based on an average industry curb weight of 1145kg. It will also make vehicles more fuel efficient by up to 13 percent.

At present, Honda’s Indian product portfolio includes four models which are available with diesel powertrain – Jazz premium hatchback, WR-V subcompact SUV, Amaze compact sedan and City mid-size sedan. If reports are to be believed, the Japanese automaker might discontinue its aging including Jazz, WRV and City. The company will focus on expanding its SUV model lineup along with upgrading its sales network.

Honda confirmed that its upcoming new SUV for India has completed development phase and enter into mass production after some final adjustments. It’s likely to be a mid-size SUV that will challenge the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, the new Toyota Hyryder and the upcoming Maruti Grand Vitara.
