Honda City Hybrid Version Launch Likely In 2021

Honda has recently launched the new-generation City sedan in the country. The new Honda City is available in two engine options – a new 1.5L DOHC petrol and a 1.5L turbo-diesel. We reported earlier that Honda is also planning to introduce the hybrid version of the City sedan. It is expected that the new Honda City Hybrid will be launched in the country in early 2021.

Few days back, Gaku Nakanishi, president and chief executive, Honda Cars India, said that the brand’s hybrid vehicle plan is intact and the production and sales of hybrid vehicle will start next year. He further confirmed that the company has already spent 3-4 years on this new hybrid product.

Honda could adopt Maruti Suzuki’s strategy of introducing mild-hybrid technologies in the Ciaz mid-sized sedan. However, few reports suggest that the company could introduce the City sedan with the two-motor hybrid system. This hybrid system is already on sale in the new Jazz in the select international markets.

The hybrid powertrain comprises of a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine with two electric motors that distribute power between the axles via e-CVT. While powering the new Jazz/Fit, this hybrid system offers 109bhp and 253Nm of torque. The new model accelerates to 100kmph from zero in just 9.4 seconds before hitting a top speed of 175kmph. The new Jazz has 3 driving modes – EV, Hybrid and Engine.

The new-gen Honda City comes equipped with several segment-leading comfort and convenience features like Lane-Watch assist, reverse camera, one-touch electric sunroof, electrically adjustable driver seat, automatic AC, and connected car technology – Honda Connect. The new model also receives a new 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 119bhp and 145Nm. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 7-step CVT.
