Hero MotoCorp is planning to foray into the electric scooter segment in the country. According to a fresh media report, the company is working on EV technology and an electric scooter that will be based on the Maestro Edge platform. Called the Hero eMaestro concept, the electric scooter will be designed and developed at the brand’s R&D Centre of Innovation and Technology (CIT) in Jaipur. Powertrain of the Hero eMaestro scooter will include a permanent magnet motor and a pack of lithium-ion battery. The former will transfer power to the rear wheel. Hero’s new EV technology is likely to be affordable to attract masses. The new Hero electric scooter will come with cloud connectivity features.

Visually, the Hero eMaestro looks similar to the standard Hero Maestro Edge 125. Though, the electric scooter features alloy wheels with sporty red finish along with a digital display for the instrument console. Read: New Hero Xtreme 160R Unveiled; Launch in March 2020

In terms of pricing, the new Hero electric scooter is likely to be priced below Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom). It will be positioned against the newly-launched TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak electric. The production version of the Hero eMaestro concept might hit roads in the next 5 years (i.e. “early half of this decade”).

Dr. Pawan Munjal, Chairman, Managing Director and CEO of Hero MotoCorp, has confirmed that the company will invest Rs 10,000 crore for the new-generation mobility solutions. The two-wheeler maker will develop new technology over the next 5 – 7 years.

Recently, the bikemaker rolled out the BS6-compliant version the Glamour and Passion Pro motorcycles. While the former has been priced at Rs 68,900 (Drum brake) – Rs 72,400 (Disc brake), the latter costs Rs 64,990 (Self Drum Alloy) and Rs 67,190 (Self Disc Drum). Hero also revealed the all-new Hero Xtreme 160R that’s slated to go on sale next month.
