Government is aiming to stop the sales of non-electric 3-wheelers and non-electric 2-wheelers up to 150cc engine capacity

In order to curb vehicular pollution, the GOI is planning to ban petrol-powered two-wheelers up to 150cc engine capacity in India. A new media report claims that the Government is aiming to stop the sales of non-electric 3-wheelers by April 2023 and non-electric 2-wheelers up to 150cc engine capacity by April 2025. These 2 segments currently have annual sales of over 2 crore units.

The new rule won’t impact the existing owners or the one who will buy the vehicles before the deadline. The GOI has already announced that the BS6 emission norms will be mandatory from April 2020. The Government has skipped on the BS5 emission norms and directly opted for the BS6 norms. If the new decision passed by GOI, only electric, scooters, motorcycles and rickshaws will only be on sale in India post 2025.

Adding to it, GOI is also considering banning the non-electric vehicles, city buses and school buses. This clearly suggests that the Government is surely pushing for the electric vehicle in India. The report further claims that the Government is not planning to offer tax sops to the EV manufacturers. Instead, the GOI is working towards giving benefits to the battery manufacturers.

Seeing the growing focus on EVs, automakers are now planning to enter into the EV segment. Bajaj will officially enter into the EV space with its all-new Urbanite brand. Adding to it, TVS Motor Company is also working on electric vehicles for the Indian market.
