Ford-Mahindra Mid-size SUV To Rival Creta; Launch In 2020

Ford Mahindra SUV

The Ford mid-size SUV developed with Mahindra will rival Hyundai Creta.

Ford Motor Company and Mahindra Group entered a strategic alliance for product development in September, 2017, followed by five MoU (Memoranda of Understanding) in March 2018. Recently, both companies signed agreements on sharing powertrain and connected car solutions. Mahindra Electric, M&M’s subsidiary, will also provide technology to develop new electric vehicles.

The American carmaker, Ford will take advantage of Mahindra’s experience in distribution and sourcing and gain more traction in India. The home-grown carmaker, on the other hand, will be benefited from Ford’s expertise and global reach.

We have informed you earlier that Ford and Mahindra will work on two SUVs – a mid-size SUV and a compact SUV. While the former will be put up against the Hyundai Creta and Jeep Compass, the latter will take on the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon.

The new mid-size SUV might underpin SsangYong’s X100 platform that will help the carmaker curb manufacturing cost. Ford’s Research & Development team will give inputs in the development of the SUV. Mahindra will develop new BS6-ready engine for the American carmaker that might be used in the mid-size SUV.

If rumors are to be believed, Mahindra’s new-generation 2.0L diesel powertrain could power the vehicle.  Design of the new mid-size SUV is likely to be inspired by Ford’s global models. As far as pricing is concerned, it could be priced as low as Rs 12 for the entry-level variant and up to Rs 18 lakh for the top-spec trim.
