To be based on Baojun 530, the 5-seater MG SUV will challenge the likes of Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier.

It is no secret that British carmaker, MG Motors will officially go on sale in India in 2019. Owned by Chinese brand – SAIC, MG Motors will launch its first model in mid-2019. If latest media report is to be believed, the first MG SUV for India will debut in April 2019. The company will launch a 5-seater premium SUV, which will be a re-engineered Baojun 530 – currently on sale in Chinese market. Though, a 7-seater model will arrive on a later stage.

The MG SUV for India is likely to be called MG Gloster and will challenge the likes of Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson and Tata Harrier. What’s interesting is that the upcoming SUV will be bigger than the Honda CR-V; however, the heavy localisation would help the automaker to price the new model competitively against the rivals. The new SUV will be locally developed at the brand’s new Halol based plant, which has an annual production capacity of 80,000 units. Also See – MG Motor Showcases Its Global Cars & SUVs In India

MG engineers will re-engineer the Baojun 530 for our market. It will have MG’s familiar hexagonal grille with blackened treatment and twin-pod headlamps with LED daytime running lights, aggressive air-intakes, bold character lines and one-piece tail-lamps. In terms of proportions, the Baojun 530 is 4,655mm in length, 1,835mm in width and 1,760mm in height with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. MG Motors would aim to give high comfort and convenience features with its first model. It will have a large touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity and navigation, reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, an electric park brake, multiple airbags, ESP, start/stop engine button, etc.

The SUV will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which will be sourced from FCA. While powering the Jeep Compass, this engine produces 170bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. The company could also launch the petrol version of the SUV. It is likely to get a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit, which powers the MG ZS SUV in some international markets. Both powertrains will meet upcoming BS6 emission norms. The automatic transmission and 4WD system will be offered on the top-spec trim.
