Mahindra Scorpio, XUV500 To Get Electric Powertrains

Mahindra will invest around 300-400 crore in converting existing models in to electric vehicles.

With Government plans to completely move to all-electric by 2030, carmakers have started working on electric powertrains for their future cars. If media reports are to be believed, Mahindra & Mahindra is also working on electric versions of the Scorpio and XUV500. Electric versions of the Scorpio and XUV500 will be priced on higher side. Report indicates that the electric Scorpio is expected to cost around 12 lakh, while the XUV500 electric could cost above 15 lakh. The company is already selling electric Verito, which is priced at Rs 9.5 lakh. This model is around 2.2 lakh more expensive than the base diesel variant of the car. The company is also spending an additional Rs 500 crore to develop new technologies and to create capacity for electric vehicles. Mahindra Electric will take care the development of the drivetrain, while M&M will handle product design and development. Additionally, the company is also working on a premium electric SUV, which will be launched by 2020.

The homegrown automaker is currently selling three electric vehicles including eVerito, eSupro and the e20 Plus. Pininfarina, the Italy-based design centre owned by M&M, is also developing a premium sports electric car. Besides, Mahindra is also participating in tenders for electric vehicles floated by the government.
