Electric Cars To Look Out For In 2020-21

At the 2020 Auto Expo, we saw a variety of new electric vehicles right from Mahindra Atom to Mercedes-Benz EQC. Some of them were there just for the showcase purpose, while a few are ready to their way to the Indian market. Here, we have listed the top 9 electric cars that will hit Indian roads in 2020 or 2021.

1. Maruti Suzuki EV

The Indo-Japanese carmaker is all set to foray into the electric vehicle space with a new model that’s likely to be based on the WaongR hatchback. We have multiple spy pictures of the upcoming Maruti electric car revealing interesting details. The test mule carries tall-boy stance similar to the standard WagonR. The split headlamps and alloy wheels could be borrowed from the Maruti Ignis. The vehicle might get fast charging support as part of the standard package. Maruti’s first electric vehicle is expected to deliver a range of around 200km.

2. Tata Altroz EV

Tata Motors confirmed that it will launch the electric iteration of the Altroz premium hatchback sometime next year. Powertrain system of the vehicle will consist of Tata’s Ziptron electric technology with different battery capacity and power figures than the Nexon EV. Its range is likely to fall between 250km – 300km. Similar to the Nexon EV, the electric Altroz might get the brand’s new ZConnect app offering 35 connected car features. Minimal cosmetic changes will be made to its design.

3. Tata HBX EV

Tata HBX, the mini SUV concept, made its debut at this year’s Auto Expo. The carmaker has confirmed that its production-ready model will hit showrooms by March 2021. The company will also bring in its electric version at a later stage. Similar to the Altroz EV, the Tata HBX EV will feature the Ziptron EV technology that includes a 30.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack with an electric motor. The electric mini SUV from Tata is likely to offer a range of over 300km. Its design might be slightly different than the regular model.

4. Renault Kwid EV

Renault Kwid electric car made its India debut at this year’s Auto Expo. Based on the CMF-A platform, the vehicle uses a 26.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 44PS electric motor. It can do 0 to 100kmph in 10.8 seconds and attain a top speed of 105kmph. Its electric range stands at 271km. The electric hatch’s battery takes 4 hours via 6.6kWh AC power socket and one an half hour by up to 30-80% via DC fast charger.

5. Mahindra eKUV100

Mahindra & Mahindra introduced the eKUV100 mini SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo. Priced at Rs 8.25 lakh (ex-showroom), the model comes powered by a 40kW electric motor and a 15.9kWh lithium-ion battery. The mini SUV delivers a claimed range of 150kmph. Its battery can be juiced up to 80% in 55 minutes via fast charger. Reports suggest that the deliveries of the electric mini SUV will be commenced by the end of this year.

6. Mahindra eXUV300

Mahindra eXUV300, which was previewed at this year’s Auto Expo, is scheduled to launch in late 2021. Interestingly, it will be the company’s first production model to be designed on the Made-in-India MESMA (Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture) platform. The electric subcompact SUV will be made available with two battery packs – the standard 40kWh and the long-range 60kWh. While the former will return a range of over 370km, the latter will deliver a range over 450km. That said, its electric range will be higher than its arch rival – Tata Nexon EV.

7. Kia Soul EV

If reports are to be believed, the South Korean carmaker is planning to introduce the Kia Soul electric car in India. Powering the small car is a 64kWh battery with an electric motor delivering 204PS and 395Nm. It can accelerate 100kmph from standstill in 7.6 seconds and achieve a top speed of 170kmph. Its battery can be charged fully in 9.5 hours by using an AC charger and in an hour by using DC charger. The Soul EV offers four driving modes – Eco, Eco+, Comfort and Sport.

8. Ford Aspire-based EV

Mahindra & Mahindra will bring in the Ford Aspire based electric car sometime next year. Just so you know, both companies had signed an MOU to develop two new SUVs and a new electric vehicle for India in 2018. As of now, details of the models are not available. We expect that the Aspire based electric vehicle will witness minor design changes and interior upgrades along with an electric powertrain.

9. Nissan Leaf

Nissan had confirmed that it will launch its globally popular Leaf electric hatchback in India. The EV, which is globally in its second-generation, is likely to be imported as CBU unit in the country. The small car comes powered by a 40kWh lithium ion battery that takes 40 minutes to get up to 80% charged via fast charger. It offers a claimed range of 400kms on a full charge. The Leaf is packed with lots of advanced comfort and safety features.
