We reported earlier that Mahindra has confirmed that the upcoming new-gen 2020 Thar will come with automatic gearbox option. The automatic gearbox will be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. The new model was scheduled to be launched around March-April; however, the launch has been pushed to October 2020.
The new-gen Mahindra Thar has been spotted testing multiple times on the Indian roads, revealing design changes and interior details. This time, the diesel automatic version of the new Thar has been spotted testing. The upcoming lifestyle SUV will be offered with 2 engine options – a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
The next-gen Mahindra Thar will be designed and developed on the new ZEN3 body-on-frame chassis, which also underpins the current-gen Scorpio and the TUV300. Mahindra’s off-road division – Mahindra Adventure has also helped the company to develop the new Thar. The new model is reportedly to be equally good in City and on highways.
The spotted model was fully covered in cloth. In fact, the interior of the SUV has also been covered. The SUV gets all-new dashboard layout dominated by large touchscreen infotainment system and instrument console with digital MID. It also gets new steering wheel, automatic gearbox, 4×4 shifter on the centre console and new seats. The new model is equipped with LED headlamps.
The Mahindra’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine was unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo. It is capable of producing 190bhp and 380Nm of torque; however, the engine is likely to be de-tuned. The diesel engine is expected to produce around 138bhp and 350Nm of torque.
